Trouble while driving

I was driving home from work tonight when my truck seem to lose power (engine not elec.) and then it kicked in again. When I put the pedal to the floor there was no real acceleration it would just increase in speed. Any ideas

Re: Trouble while driving

Do you still have a cat on your pickup? If so the cat might be clogged, or your might have clogged internals, try running a SeaFoam clean through the engine and if that doesn't solve the problem , and if you have a Cat try having the cat taken off and replaced. Also could try changing the fuel filter out checking to see if anything is causing it to get less fuel.

Re: Trouble while driving

I will try that thanks. But now it wont even start, could it be the fuel pump. I have a pretty recent filter.

Re: Trouble while driving

Could be, could be a clogged fuel line also, my friends 92 s10 had a bad fuel line and we just cut it out and replaced it with a rubber hose, started right up, but it all really depends. What does it sound like when you try to start it? Does it click over or does it just sorta crank and not want to fully crank to start?

Re: Trouble while driving

when you turn the key over does it sound like the fuel pump turned on?You should hear a sorta Humm type sound or a click, if that doesn't turn on that might be your problem.

Re: Trouble while driving

What Year is the truck? And that does really sound like there isn't any fuel getting to the Engine, Another problem i ran into with mine was my coil got wet and it did the exact same thing so... maybe checking the coil and mking sure it isn't wet and everything electrical is connected properly. But i would disconnect the Fuel Hoses going into the Throttle Body * if it has one * there should be gas comming out of them if not then it might be the fuel pump. How long ago did you change your fuel filter?

Re: Trouble while driving

Its a 97. Ill check the coil and all of the electrical today when I get a chance. The fuel filter was replaced about a month and half ago. I am going to get a fuel pressure gauge and test it tommorrow. Thanks again.

Re: Trouble while driving

ok. I got the gauge and tested the pressure. I ran the test three times and every time i was getting 58-59 psi when Haynes says i need 60-66psi. Haynes say the next step is to install a fuel shut-off valve in the return line to test if the fuel pressure regulator is woking right i do not know how to do this though. I think it is the pump, it does not have that strong hum to it any more. Is there any way to be sure before i start to replace it.

Re: Trouble while driving

You can also pinch the return line to test the regulator.

Also, what happens to the pressure when you turn off the engine? Watch it for 5 or 10 minutes.
