Question Head Lube Question, again...

Hey all;
Ok I'll be building my head tonight and installing Tuesday/Wednesday. Question about lubing. I need to oil the actual valves, like where they go inside the head right with oil? Then the valve clips or whatever you call them need oil or greese then also? Then the lifters need to be soaked overnight in oil. Then on wednesday when I do the swap I know the cams need to greesed up, but do the rockers need anything or no? Sorry for quick question, working from phone.

Re: Head Lube Question, again...

Well, when I did mine, I lubed everything up with oil first, then drained a few quarts from the block and poured new oil all over the entire valve train. It seemed to work fine for me.

Re: Head Lube Question, again...

But like when I'm specifically building the head (off the block) what all do I oil? Like the valves, shouldnt' have to do the springs right?

Re: Head Lube Question, again...

You don't necessarily need to oil everything while you're putting it in, just make sure all of the components that have friction get some lube. I use moly lube instead of oil just because it sticks better and doesn't make such a mess. Smear some on the valves when you put them in and then make sure you get the cam journals and the camshafts all nice and lubed up, but the rest of it (springs, retainers, etc) you don't really need to worry about.

Re: Head Lube Question, again...

Sweet. Like I said, I'm building it up tonight, getting everything prepped, and then swapping on tuesday or wednesday FINALLY! Actually excited about it. I hope that little piece comes in by then, but if not I'll have to ghetto-rig up something.

It's all good. Don't worry about it. I may be able to use the one from my current IM, but I may not want to risk cracking that one off too. It's no biggy really. Thanks again for sending that.

Jesus you two, get a room already.

But even if you dont really need to oil everything, it sure as hell wouldnt hurt anything.

Maybe if we ignore him, he'll go away.

Got 6 damn valves done. Shit I can't make any tools to make this go together easy. Nothing I have or can throw together is making a good compressor. I know about that tool with the O2 socket welded on but I dont have a welder. I've been using a giant C-Clamp, and then 2 smaller C-Clamps stacked on top of each other on top the the spring. The big one is then being used to push the smaller ones down. Works good, but once you get the one in (where's theres 2 in a section), the pieces from the smaller C-Clamps get in the way of the springs then. Complicated. Have to try to finish this tomorrow.

Re: Head Lube Question, again...

I took a socket (13/16 i think) and cut a chunk out of the side and used that with a C-clamp and it worked freakin awesome, took a 1/2 hour to do all 16 valves. And a tiny ass magnet works wonders for placing the retainers where you want them too.

Re: Head Lube Question, again...

See I don't have anything to cut out the side of a socket. That would take days for me to do that.

I actually just came back from ACE hardware and bought a piece of pipe or something that would fit perfectly on top of retainer, it's decently long, and has a large hole on the side of it, halfway up the pipe. Should work good, however I'm at work from 9-8, so I can't test it until later. Should work though.
