Clutch Job
Im just wondering if anyone has ever taken there jetta to have a clutch installed and what the price runs to have one done...My clutch is fine but im thinking on a stage 1/2 clutch for my jetta..
I have the knowledge to do a clutch job but not on a jetta ive dealt with Honda/acura for a lifetime and can do anything on them... but i was just wondering if a clutch in a jetta is as simple as a Honda/acura or anything of that sort.... Cause i see on the transmission that theres quite a bit more to unhook then anything else ive worked on... |

I usally like to do everything on my own but the clutch was one thing I couldn't. The engine is a transverese mount which makes it very hard to work on so i ended up taking it to the dealer and they installed an ACT stage 1 clutch and new flywheel and the whole thing was about 1000 for everything...

Re: Clutch Job
I installed my own clutch, but I had my engine pulled out at the time which made it easy. When you pull the engine, you pull it and the trans as a unit. The clutch has a really elegant design that is a bit different from the norm. This is probably why they last so long, mine had 135K mi and still had half it's life left. I stongly recommend getting some type of service manual before you start if you want to do it yourself. There was a posting about a month ago with a price estimate, you may want to do some digging through the older posts.

Re: Clutch Job
I am trying to rremove the tranny from my 96 diesel jetta, and I have to remove the cv joint flange from the tranny becaause it is hitting the flywheel. how do I remove the flange from the tranny. I was told to pry it back because it is spring loaded and remove a clip. Do I pry on the whole flange or the center? I pryed off the plastic cover in the center, but that did'nt seem to show anything.

Re: Clutch Job
VW has a rather unique way of doing their clutch. It's odd, but it works great and it makes the clutch last a really long time. The clutch can be replaced without pulling the engine, but it's really tough do to limited space. Make sure you replace the bolts that hold on the flywheel and the pressure plate. Buy new bolts from the dealer before you start the job. They are meant to stretch when torqued and you'll run into trouble if you don't replace them. You can buy an alignment tool (plastic disk) on line for a few bucks. It's worth it.
