Question Anyone have flowmaster system on a 1997 Cobra or similar with no other major mods??

If so, which kit/muffler series and do you like it???

I'm trying to decide between the American Thunder (40 series) and the Force II (50 series). The caveat here is that I want to get enough rumble that I notice a difference over stock, but I don't want to wake my kid up every day when I leave for work at 5:30 am.

I'm having doubts that the 50 series will be a big enough difference over stock, but I'm scared that the 40 series will be too loud. Also, if I try the 40 series and it is too loud, does anyone know how easy it would be to re-sell???

PLEASE ADVISE AND SOON. I AM ITCHING TO GET SOMETHING PUT ON AND GET ON THE ROAD...

Re: Anyone have flowmaster system on a 1997 Cobra or similar with no other major mods??

With catalitic converters on the car it wont be too loud. Are you sold on flowmasters? There are several other companys that make great sounding exhaust for these cars. Try searching on google. Some sites have sound clips. To answere your original question though, I dont have a '97 Cobra and I dont have either flowmaster system. But the 50 series in my opinion will be barely noticeable over stock at idle. You will tell a difference in sound while accelerating, but it wont be loud. The 40 series will be somewhat louder at idle but not by much I dont think, generally in my experiance flowmasters tend to idle pretty quiet on fords. However going down the road the 40 series will have a more aggressive note, but I still dont think it will be overwhelming. It wouldnt hurt to get a professional opinion before you buy. I havent worked with much of the modular stuff so I know more about the pushrod motors and how they react to such changes.

Re: Anyone have flowmaster system on a 1997 Cobra or similar with no other major mods??

When I had my 92 5.0 I had stock headers but, I had an off-road H pipe (no cats) and 2 chamber Flowmasters. I can't remember, are the 40 series 2 chamber and the 50's 3 chamber? The 2 chambers w/off-road H sounded mean as hell at idle and full throttle. But, I was also 23 then, now I'm 33 and have a five year old. I know that with the system I had I didn't like driving it when I had a head-ache. That just made it worse. I think since you don't want to wake everyone up at 5:30am, I would go with the 3 chambers or 50's I guess is what they call them now......Man, that last sentence makes me sound old!! Oh, it will help ALOT to keep it from being too loud if you keep your stock H-pipe on.

stock h pipe with all those cats if you go with 50s you will barely notice unless your behind the car listening (which your not). 40 series is atleast somewhat of a difference.

Yeah, that's right. I forgot the 4.6's have 6 cats don't they? I was thinking of a 5.0 that has 4 cats. Four was still too many, I don't know why they just couldn't use 2 from the factory.

99+ uses 4 cats 96-98 was 6. either way 99-04 was still way too quiet with 4 cats in my opinion.

Re: Anyone have flowmaster system on a 1997 Cobra or similar with no other major mods??

I only see 4 cats, are the other 2 up by the engine. My Cobra is still under wraps do I didn't open the hood, but I can only see 4 underneath.

Either way, it sounds like I should be getting the American Thundars and still won't be too loud?

Please, still looking for opinions/experiences..???

Thanks to everyone that has replied so far.

Why are you worried about it being loud? With just some weld-in chambered mufflers it won't be loud... Or even with glasspacks, I'd just get some regular 40's.

Just for clarification, are you saying because I don't have any other engine mods or H-pipe changes and because I'm only doing mandrel-bent cat-back 40s, it won't be super loud?

Please advise.....?????

I had the Mac catback on my 2000 GT and it was not too loud really. It was pretty mellow most of the time. It just gave the car a healthy rumble.

If you have the stock H-pipe and it has 4 or 6 cats (can't remember what year has 6) on it and you're just putting on 40's, you'll be fine.

Just to show you guys how long it's been since I've bought muffs. are the 40's the 2-chamber muffs. and the 50's are the 3-chamber??

If you really want it to be quiet put the 3-chambers on, but it probably won't be that much louder than stock or not as loud as you want them to be. I'd go with the 2-chambers.

Yes the 40's are the 2 chamber mufflers.

So with the 4 cats and no other mods, you don't think the 40's will be too loud? Also, is there a difference between a 40 Delta series and the 40 American Thunder? Seems like the same thing to me, but sometimes I'm not sure.
