97 achieva 2.4 dohc cranks but no start

I have a 97 achieva and i bought it a month ago with a water leak. I found the water pump (finaly) put a new one on and put it all back together, when attempted to start it it would not start only crank and backfire every now and then. So i thought it was the timing chain had jumped time so i fixed it and put it back once again. when i went to start it, it done the exact thing. it will not start, i can crank the daylights out of it though. it has gas and is getting gas because i can smell it. it is getting compression and it is not the security system. I thought it was the crank or cam sensor and both of them was plugged up correctly and looked to be okay. I am thinking it is a sensor that i have unpluged but i cant find anything, is there something else that could cause it, It ran fine exept for the water leak when i tore it apart. Is it a bent valve where it jumped time, i tryed pulling the valve cover off only to find i have to take the timing chain cover off yet again. i am clueless as to what to do PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! asap

Welcome to AF.

Double check the crank sensor wires, could have a short in the wiring.

Check and see if its getting good spark.
If not check the coils and ICM
