looking for suggestions on rebuild
first off... this is my first rebuild.
with that said. i am rebuilding a 305 ho out of a 86 pickup. im gonna put it in a 82 camaro. i am gonna use the original block, crank and pistons since they are in good shape. i am gonna get a melling hv oil pump. i am planning on a lunati street master hydraulic cam and lifter kit. the cam has 275 duration and .477" lift. i am planning on using the stock heads since from what i understand they are what made the engine high output. im not sure about rebuilding them or whatever i need to do to them though. i have a edelbrock preformer intake that was given to me and i am planning on a holley 600 on top. so am i messing up or are there any helpful suggestions. thanks |

Re: looking for suggestions on rebuild
Well, first you'll need to get the block boiled and the cylinders checked. If they are going to need boring you won't be able to reuse the pistons.
The heads should be checked for "true" and have a 3 angle valve job done. Replace the springs, retainers & locks. While at the machine shop for the valve job, have them install screw in studs. You'll be thankful later. Other than that, you have a good selection of parts there that should make for a fairly powerful engine (say 330 HP or so at the crank) The 600 CFM carb is a good choice for size, don't be tempted to go larger, it'll be a waste. |

Re: looking for suggestions on rebuild
my father in law gave me the block and told me it was in great shape. he said he had it checked at a machine shop. as for the heads... ive been reading up and there is a lunati 305 rebuild i ran into on the internet and im gonna try to use the same parts they did. this ought to work out good since they used the same cam as i am intending. they used 1 : 1.5 ratio long slot rockers. then they replaced the valves 1.84 with larger ones 1.94. then high performance springs, retainers, locks, pushrods, pushrod guideplates, and screw in studs.
