![]() been trying to figure out what is wrong with this jeep i just got about a month ago and cant figure it out. I was working on it the other day trying to figure out why it wouldnt start and found out that the starter relay was out so i have to jump the wires there to get it to start. After i finaly got it started i went to move it by the house so i could put water in it and when i put it in gear i got nothing, didnt move an inch. i checked the fluid and it seems to be fine, checked the linkage and it all good, then i spoted a black hose that looks to be coming from the top of the tranny and it was just setting there one end not connected to anything. was wondering if it might be a vacume hose or somthing of that sort. this is the first jeep i have owned and dont know mutch about them. any input would help... tnx for ur time |

Re: 89 cherokee 4.0 4X4 wont move
Hi-Ya! Welcome to AF...
Could be, or maybe a vent tube. Can you take a pic? More details will help- milage, other work done already, etc... |

Re: 89 cherokee 4.0 4X4 wont move
i think the milage is setting around 168,000. i got it for free from my wife grandfather who was tired of messing with it. He told me he has put new brakes on it. looked like a new exasht as well. has a newer started too. dont think i will be able to get a good pic of anything under the truck do to where it is setting. we just cant figure out what is wrong with it. when he parked it, everything worked fine besides for the water leak witch i found out to be a busted heater core hose, but other than that he said everything was fine before hand

Ok... Start here-
http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm (Bookmark this, it's a really good resource) I'm gonna do some more poking around for ya. Others should chime in when they come back on. Oh, yeah, that's prolly just a vent hose. |

Re: 89 cherokee 4.0 4X4 wont move
This is interesting:
Quote- mgreen84 Re: AW4 doesn't start when cold The filter will sometime clog with a "gel-like" crud if you use bad or cheap fluid and once it gets warm and melts out of the filter it runs fine. I didn't believe it, until we had one come into the shop and the filter looked like it was full of red jello... this happens when cheap fluid gets wroked hard and breaks down... Re: 89 cherokee 4.0 4X4 wont move
The hose coming from the top is probably your vent line. It should be routed up to someplace on the firewall. the AW4 doesnt use vacuum for anything.
From your description of "not moving an inch" Im guessing that the transfer cae has been knocked into "N". |

Re: 89 cherokee 4.0 4X4 wont move
i have shifted the transfer case and shifted it into 4L and 4H and still nothing. Ill try pulling the pan and seeing if the trany fluid is all geled up or not. if anyone has any other ideas just let me know
