1:12 Tamiya Yardley McLaren M23 - Monaco GP
Hi
I have finally finished a model... I have been working for a very long time on this one: It is basically the M23 Yardley kit with some replaced parts from the Texaco version to make it like the car Mike Hailwood drove in mid 74. I really liked the golden rims which is painted with Finisher paints from RB 10. All fittings and tubing by Modelers. Paint by Tamiya and coated with Zero gloss 1K, rubbed out and polished polished polished... The central part of the car - the bathtub - was built with reference to the way Paul Budzik made it in an age old article in Fine Scale Modeler, where he assemble the bottom and top part without adding all the insides to get rid of a very evident seamline along the top in front of the cooler intakes. Afterwards the rest of the parts is pushed inside with locating pins removed beforehand. A lot of rivets has been replaced with brass or steel rivets to make them more visible, like on the real car. The dashboard has been scratchbuild to make the instruments look like they have been put into place rather than being one part. A lot of pictures has been studied to see where all the wires went. The clear part around the cockpit was replaced with one in vacuform and lightly painted with clear orange from Tamiya. Should really be yellow but that wasn't available, so it had to be light coats of orange! It was fastened to the bodywork with brass rivets, that was glued from the inside and cut off afterwards. The rear view mirrors are from the kit but the stays are scratched, as those in the kit are the wrong shape for that part of the season. A lot more has been done to the kit... I can take some more pictures if any is interested. Flemming |

What a beautiful model! Love the gold wheel rims, they really change the overall look of the car.
It would be great to see some close-up build pics if you get the time to take them. |

That is absolutely fantastic! I don't think I'd have the patience necessary to do a 1:12. You've achievd a superb result.
F1 cars were proper motors in the 70's, they all looked so different and look at the size of those gumball rear tyres! Adhesion was provided more by mechanical grip of the tyre/suspension combo than by the aero package of todays F1 that does nothing for overtaking. |

It looks fantastic and the exhaust staining is one of the most realistic I've ever seen. All the little details all help make this a wonderfully realistic model. Nice job.

Very beautiful built.
Some much detail is in there. I can look for ages at those detail shots. Very impressive. |
