Re: HELP!! 2003 dodge neon sxt

If you car has a manual transmission, I dont have any idea what it could be, but...if you have an automatic tranny I have a wild guess: When coming to a stop sign, put the transmission into neutral before you drop below about 25 mph. See if the noise is gone. If so it could be a bad motor mount, or one whose bolts are loose. The noise is from the motor tilting backwards as it down-shifts into 2nd or 1st - which will happens just before the car stops moving.
If the noise still happens, another thing to try would be to come to a stop on an upgrade - without using the brakes at all. If there is no noise, it must be related to some action of the brakes - which put a twisting force on the front suspension components.
If you bring it to a stop while driving parallel and close to a brick building, (such as close behind a large industrial building), you should be able to isolate whether the sound comes from the left side, right, - or the middle if the sound is the same going in either direction. Do this in both directions with both front windows down. You may be able to isolate whether the sound comes from one side or the other, or if its sounds the same both ways, it might be from the middle of the car (where the front motor mount is).

My Chev van makes a clunk noise each time I drop below 5 mph - its the 700L4 tranny downshifting into 1st., but I dont think front wheel drive MOPAR trannies do that.
