Rear wheel bearing replacement for 2000 Intrigue
Greetings,
My 2000 Intrigue needs one of the rear wheel bearings replaced, since it's developed a loud rubbing noise while driving at any speed. I'm planning on doing both rear wheels, so does anyone have a quick primer on how-to-do or a URL that would guide me through what tools and supplies I should have to accomplish this? Thanks in advance! |

Ive actually never heard of a rear bearing failure on these cars, are you sure its the rear? did you jack it up and check it out?

That's what I'd been told by a mechanic that replaced both rear brake rotors.

Re: Rear wheel bearing replacement for 2000 Intrigue
Oh well I guess its not impossible. Just never heard of it until now. Anyway I grabbed my Chiltons and the procedure they have seems very easy.
1. Remove caliper and caliper bracket, ill assume rotor as well. 2. Disconnect the ABS harness and detach the electrical connector 3. Remove the four rear hub-to-knuckle bolts. 4. Separate hub from knuckle 5. Installation is the reverse of removal, torque the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. You should only need basic hand tools, from the pictures, it looks like a set of box-end wrenches might come in handy, especially the ratcheting kind, because it looks like there might not be much clearance for a ratchet. As always Id recommend a torque wrench as well, but if you dont have one, or cant fit the one you do have in there, then just put some blue thread locker on the bolt threads and put some good torque to them. It looks to be extremely simple, but Ive never done it, so I cant say for sure. Just make sure you have the car safely supported with some jackstands or blocks, which I know is especially difficult on the rear of the car because of how the frame runs, but make sure its stable, you dont want it slipping when your banging around on rusted parts and whatnot.

Thanks for your help....
I'll be checking the brakes and bearings in the next couple days, hopefully I can rid the beast of it's growling. |
