Is There Any Way to Test an EGR??

96 S10 4x4 4.3L

I've been chasing an EGR P1406 for a week now, and I'm supposed to get it inspected tomorrow am, and right now it ain't gonna pass (which is total BS but enough political soapboxing for now). I've had the unit off, cleaned it, new screened Tomco gasket, cleaned out the passageways on the manifold as best I can with carb cleaner, heavy wire, airgun, I bolt it up, drive for half an hour an BINK! on goes the MIL. 3 times now.

Is there any way to bench test an EGR? Naturally the part is ~$130, and naturally no returns on electrical componets. I'd like to confirm for sure that the EGR is bad before I smoke that $$$ and maybe have to eat it. thanks...

Re: Is There Any Way to Test an EGR??

It is a EGR position sensor code.
The only to test or check it is with a engine capable scanner that will read out the position sensor readings and and test the egr positions.
Without the scanner it is just a turkey shoot on it.
Could also be a bad pcm or wiring.
But there is a good chance it is a bad egr valve.
Good luck

testing procedures with wiring diagrams and testing flow chart here: http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...es.htm#hd1-1-2 If you have an OBII you will need a scan tool like MT said, but that was the crossover year from OBI.

1995 was the crossover year from OBD I to OBD II, with the first true OBD II systems being seen in the last vehicles produced. All 1996 models have linear EGR valves and require the use of a scan tool to assist in diagnosis.

Replace the valve. Every blazer I have maintained will eventually need one. Your problem isnt carbon, the egr has a pental possion sens and tells the computer what percent it is open and trys to adjust or that it recieves no signal back at all. been there done that. want to know for sure, buy a new otc scanner, $ 2500

Re: Is There Any Way to Test an EGR??

Hey, Been working on the worst problems for years, your best bet is replace the valve, I have never seen a blazer yet not need an EGR valve eventually. It is extreemly rare to need and ECM. That is a shop saying good luck but we have no idea. I have diagnosed that code a 100 times, never been wrong yet! Sounds like you have covered your bases.

American car companies started the trend of building the next years model six months early and calling it the next years model, right about now the 2008's should be arriving on the lots. My 65 Mustang is a June 64 build with the Falcon engine and tranny, wont bolt up to a true 65 build. My sisters Pontiac is a 96 with an OBD I. The OBD II wasnt required until Jan. 1st 1996 and the 96 model was already out.

And your point is?

As I said, all 96 S-series vehicles are OBD II, even if they were made in June of 1995. GM started converting them with the 1995 year model. The first ones were OBD I, Next came what some people call OBD I 1/2, and at the end of the production run they were all fully OBD II compliant. That's one of the reasons that 1995s are a PITA, there are 3 different OBD systems, each requiring a different way of retrieving codes.
