EGR Valve

Hi guys,

My SES light has come on twice in the last 2 weeks.

Took it to AZ and they told me it was the EGR Valve throwing the code. They reset it and now it's back again. I know what it does but is it something I should get taken care of right away or can it wait a while?

Thank you.

Re: EGR Valve

It would help the post the specific DTC.

I would checkout any EGR codes sooner rather than later. It could affect drivability and fuel economy. Affects the fuel injection system by causing improper air/fuel mixture.

To start remove the EGR and clean the spring loaded pintle. Make sure it moves freely. Then check and clean the EGR manifold port passage from exhaust to the lower intake manifold.

Re: EGR Valve

So it seems like it will be an easy part to replace. I can do a few things but not the really involved replacements. Do you know if this is a simple replacement or should I go to a garage?

Thank you, I really appreciate it!!!

Re: EGR Valve

If the EGR is bad it is easy to replace and DIY. Only two nuts hold it to the flange bolts. Around 13mm. However, once removed it is recommended to replace the gasket since it may not come off intact. One thing to note is OEM and aftermarket EGRs are pricey so try the easy stuff like cleaning first. Good luck.

Re: EGR Valve

Also, if it's an EGR insufficient flow code coming up, it could be a vacuum leak at or near the MAP sensor/PCV valve housing. The PCM uses the vacuum signal from the MAP to determine EGR efficiency.

Get us the actual DTC code as bnaylor suggested so we can help point you in the right direction.

Re: EGR Valve

Tonyr has a GTP Rich. Although MAP is used for the EGR flow test, L67s do not get the same vacuum related problems like a L36 (MAP sensor/PCV valve housing) or an infamous P0401 DTC (insufficient EGR flow) since the PCV valve is mounted into the supercharger. However, I would check the PCV valve and any o-ring seals and make sure vacuum lines to the MAP sensor are tight and/or good.

The specific DTC as requested would be helpful for troubleshooting purposes and possibly not wasting any money on an EGR valve that may not be bad.

Re: EGR Valve

I bit the bullet and bought a new EGR Valve @ AZ for $178. Was a piece of cake to replace. I cleaned the housing and put the new gasket and EGR in. Went back to AZ and had them erase the code and it was P0401 DTC (insufficient EGR flow) like you guys suggested. I also replaced the PCV valve, which I do at least once a year anyway. When I pulled it out I noticed the black o-ring was halfway down the valve instead of up near the top like it's supposed to be. The old EGR Valve had the gasket melted to the bottom of it and was in rough shape appearance wise anyway. Thank you guys for your help and hopefully this will be worth the money.
