Car won't start, MAF???

I have a 94 Saturn SC2 and recently ran into an issue. I was getting on the freeway and as I accelerated the car begin to sputter. I was able to get it up to about 65mph and it sputtered again then I noticed my RPM's and Speed were decelerating while I had the gas pedal pushed almost to the floor. I was able to cross about 4 lanes to the shoulder where it finally died. The car will attempt to start but does not. Any ideas on what could be wrong. I was told the MAF, but just wanted to run it here to confirm. Thanks

Re: Car won't start, MAF???

If I had to guess, I would ensure the EGR is good and the pintle underneath is operating freely. My second guess would be a severely plugged cat/ converter. One way to test is to pull your oxygen sensor out of the exhaust manifold and start it up. It will be loud but if you have regained power... there is the main problem..

A bad fuel pump will also cause a similar situation.

Re: Car won't start, MAF???

the 1.9L does not have a MAF(mass air flow) sensor, EGR and bad cat are both possible, but more likey a EGR stuck open would cause a problem at lower speeds and a bad cat will show problems over a few days before totaly killing an engine. start by checking spark, fuel pressure and injectior signal

Re: Car won't start, MAF???

I had the same problem with my 92 sc coupe. I was driving back from a friends house when all of a sudden it started to skip really bad and it kept stalling at stop lights, driving down the road I could not accelerate very well, ect... I started by checking the smallest things first, and that is where I found out that I had blew a spake plug. It split the ceramic insulator. It was just a hair line crack. After that I started running bosch +2. I would check your plugs and wires, if not I would listen to these guys answers.

Have a aassistent go to the back of the car and listen to see if the fuel pump is making a noise while you turn the ignition key to the run position. You should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds.
