wheel humming

Hey all i bought some Ikon 17 inch wheels with 205/40/r17's on them, used, with decent tread. I threw em on my car, and the front end vibrates when coming to a stop and while driving the tires on the front hummmmmmm, that kinda noise......there was no humming or noises when i had my stock rims on this morning, and i just put these on today and they are making noise.....what is wrong??!!? they are so nice, but making noise

Re: wheel humming

I'm assuming you bought them used, since you said they have "decent tread".
Did you or the seller get them ballanced before throwing them on your car? As far as I know, the vibrating seems to me like they need to be re-balanced.

Re: wheel humming

It varies from shop to shop. I think Canadian Tire charges something like $10 or so per tire. It's not that expensive, dude. Call them or other shops in your area up and ask what they charge.

Re: wheel humming

Depending on the tires it could just be the tires themselves making the humming. My kumohs hummed for a few days until a few burn outs and normal driving and now they are right as rain. As for the vibration in the front end that could be many issuse. Front suspension, brake pads worn down, rotor warp, brake calipers are starting to go. So get the rims and tires balanced and checked out and be sure to check all those for issuse.

Re: wheel humming

lol my tires are komohs too......i just got new calipers on, what i did was switch the bake right woth the front right and most of the noise and the vibration when coming to a stop went away. still hear a bit of humming, do you think its just because they are new to my car and need to wear in a bit?

Re: wheel humming

Your just not used to riding around on tires that dont suck ass...it will pass. Feel free to do some e-brakeing to work out some bugs and have some fun.

Re: wheel humming

Well # 1, Your tire size should be 225/45-17 for those rims your running. Throwing your speedo off +3-4 mph. # 2 the tires could be chopped, #3 get yourself some hub rings.

225/40-18
215/35-19

if you cared to know.

Re: wheel humming

hummming sound coming down to a stop is maybe cuz you have cheap tires. get some decent tires and the humming will not be as loud.

i had nankang tires of my pt cruiser and got rid of them and put on pirelli's on and it was a different story.

the sound is from when your braking the tire vs pavement contact sound will vary depending on tire you get.
