Exclamation 96 Jetta, Is dead..HELP!!

Hello I just paid off my 96 Jetta and the next day on my way to work, I left my car running while I ran into the store and opened the sunroof so just the vent (the back part) was lifted, Came back in and it was WIDE open. Could not close it.

Later in the day I left work started driving, The check engine light came on. 10 minutes later while getting on a bridge my car DIED!! Some nice men pushed it out of the way and there I sat waiting for my tow truck. Someone told me to try the relay fuel pump which is this like fuse plug in, I replaced it. It still won't start, It turns over and sounds like it is going to start but will not start. HELP!! I need my car desperately!!!

I forgot to add that is is a automatic.

Before the car died, It was having a hard time accelerating (this was only when my check engine light had came on). It died, started for ten seconds MAYBE then died. Now it will not start at all.

First find out what the check engine light is all about. A lot of autoparts dealers will loan you one. If the error is lean fuel mixture, I'd guess the fuel pump died. Is the sun roof electric? If not, maybe someone tried to break in. Is anything missing? My guess would be a bad fuel pump.

I will get the fuel pump replaced and hopefully that will solve the problem. And the sunroof is an automatic Is it a fuse do you think? I don't know!!
