93 z34 cant get timing set

i have a friend who has the above, timing belt broke and now his mech cant get timing set. mechanic says that one of the lobes on the camshaft is too worn to set properly. 3.4 engine with 90k miles

any thought on mech's point?

Royal B@#@$ to set the timing i have one that looks like it jumped timeing and it take me about an hour or so to set it just wainting for it to warm up outside.
