Should I consider buying it?

I am looking at a 1987 Volvo 240DL to buy for my daughter. It is in nice shape. A friend is selling the car because it's sat in the driveway for 6 years. Rarely was it moved. It started right up when they moved it over. It needs new tires but seems to be in good shape. She had $5000 worth of work put into it before she let it sit. Now she is either going to donate it or I can buy it for $500. I am going to look at it closely this weekend. Of course, needs oil changed immediately before a test ride. Now the trans should too but I want to know if overall history of this model has been good? Any suggestions?
