WIP - Benetton B192

This is Benettons 1992 F1 car, driven by Martin Brundle and Michael Schumacher. I actually started this kit sometime last year but like many others it was abandoned, so I have resurrected this project from certain doom. I had originally painted the monococque and rear cowl, but for some reason I wasn't happy with my masking job so I ended up stripping the whole thing. Now it's all bare plastic that needs to be sanded and repainted. I plan to not use the green decals, but to mask the yellow and airbrush the green portions. Needless to say, this isn't your typical fresh out of the box build, however I plan to use more carbon fiber than the Tyrrell 023, plus some after market C*mel decals. Don't be surprised if this looks like a clone of my Tyrrell 023 WIP thread, lol.



I took apart the engine, stripped the paint in 91% alcohol, then applied a fresh coat of TS-29 semi gloss black to the corresponding parts, plus Alclad Aluminum specifically for the engine block. The gearbox casing was painted with Tamiyas suggested mix of flat brown to gun metal. The Formula Perfect Manual I have shows this to be somewhat accurate. In case you were wondering, I painted the Ford F1 logo by dry brushing enamel silver with very very light strokes. I also applied some CF to the rear wing supports.





The radiator ducts are covered in Scale Motorsport CF in a similar fashion to my Tyrrell 023, no surprise there. I plan to use more CF around the monococque, chassis floor, and cockpit area. BTW, does anybody know if the area between the duct with the split radiators needs CF?





The seat/steering wheel has been unchanged since my original build of this kit.



Here is a mockup of the monococque, chassis floor, radiator ducts, and engine in place.



The next step is to prime all the parts and spray the yellow with TS-47 Chrome Yellow. That's it for now...

Very nice and clean build. I would assume that all areas of the duct that are not radiator are CF although it is not really noticeable so I wouldn't sweat it.

Excellent start.The carbon fibre work looks great and your engine is very nicely painted.It's a good idea to spray the green areas.I did that when I built mine and it looks 100% better than the decals.

Update - My initial plan was to attach the bottom half of the monococque after painting was complete, but this would result in a fairly noticeable gap. The bottom half of the monococque had been primed and painted with TS47 Chrome Yellow from my first attempt. I have decided to go nuts with masking tape and just sand and fill this seam despite the fact that the bottom half of the monococque houses the cockpit and seat assembly. If I get over spray inside the cockpit I will not be a happy camper!



The "floorpan" has had some BMF applied to the heat shielding portions while the brakes and rear uprights have been applied. Note the lack of bodywork protruding between the rear suspension arms. I plan to go the crazy route and somehow weave them through the suspension arms once the engine is in place. I've already test fit them so I know it shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck with the monocoque. Remember to double check that you can fit the front suspension arms too.

The bottom of the monocoque can be cut out so the seat can be intstalled after painting the monocoque. I did it when I built one.

Update - I have primed the various body parts and airbrushed them with decanted TS-47 Chrome Yellow. A warning to those looking to decant - let the paint gas out for about 1-2 hours before using! This sprayed very well after adding a small amount of lacquer thinner. I waited about 1 week, then applied masking tape for the green portions. I didn't have a template, so I used various reference photos and tried to get the curves correct.







I decided not to use the decals for two reasons. One reason was that I used up the green livery decals from my previous aborted build, and secondly I prefer the consistent coverage of paint. I used decanted Tamiya Park Green which airbrushed very nicely. I had some bleeding on the masking line, but it shouldn't be too noticeable.



Monococque pictures to follow. Surprisingly I didn't get any over spray in the cockpit, just leftover residue from filling and sanding the bottom half of the monococque.

I have applied BMF to the undertray and glued the engine and radiator ducts to the undertray as well.





The next step is to work on the rest of the bodywork and apply the decals.

The monococque and rear cowling have been clear coated to cover up the step between the yellow and green. This went on with no problems except for some runs which I have since touched up. I have applied CF to the rear of the monococque and rear wing endplates, attached the suspension arms, and applied the decals including the very nice C@m3l decals from Tabu, who are now out of business due to the lovely tobacco lawyers. The front nosecone was still covered in it's original paint from my first aborted build up until a couple weeks ago. I have since stripped all the paint from this part and applied white primer, but it won't be another couple of days before it's ready to be attached to the monococque. The suspension cover that goes on the top of the monococque is currently awaiting a fresh coat of green. In other words, I have a lot of random parts that are not complete.

That paint job looks superb! Great work. The CF on the interior of the end-plates makes a great contrast. Keep up the excellent work.
