Denali Fuel Gauge

Hi Everyone

I have a 02 Denali XL with 86xxx miles on it and having a little problem. A while back i went a Fill up on Gas and when i crank the truck back up the fuel Gauge was on Empty, My light for low fuel is on and the Trip and Miles per day is not working right. I ask the dealership about it and they told the sensor is out and i need to replace the Fuel pump just to fix it. Are they correct or is there a relay of fuse somewhere i need to check before i dump $500 to fix it.
