Really need first car advice

Here's the deal,
Im 18 and about to get a car for college in a few months. I naturally love cars and I'm a car freak. Unfortunately most of the cars I like are way out of my price range and I'm stuck in a rut. I've been debating what to buy because different people tell me different things. My family all drive Toyota/Lexus.... but I don't think I can afford that.

I am looking to spend $6,000 MAX on the car and need this to be an economical and problem free car with low insurance. I have bad history with american cars so that's out of the question. It doesn't need to be fast but definitly not something like a geo metro if you know what I mean.

Also, let me note my parents wouldn't let me buy a stickshift car because my mom thinks they are "dangerous"...... I'm really confused on what to get, so please help a brotha out! Thanks

Re: Really need first car advice

what about a grand am? they're american but they're reliable, get good mpg, have a little get up n' go, and can easily be had for under $6k in good shape with low mileage.

If your looking for something reliable and in your price rang get a mid to late 90's Camry. You'll have to drain the oil out of that thing before it dies too.

Re: Really need first car advice

Thanks for the suggestions.
As for the grand am, my mom bought a brand new chevy malibu which had the 3.1 engine (which i believe is the same as the grand am) and that car started giving us problems as early as @18K miles and we sold it after it broke down on us 4 or 5 times. Long story short, that was the biggest waste of money no our part and I'm never going that route again. I'll go and search up on that camry.

grand am has either the 3.4 mfi or 2.2 ecotec, same as the alero. i'm talking about 99+, i think the ones before that had the 3.1. long story short i had a 2000 ga with 112k miles and it ran perfectly. only sold it because I wanted a v8.

Re: Really need first car advice

I'd still get a manual anyway.
If you like doing your own maintenence, Saturns are generally problem free cars. My dad has done his own maintenence on all three saturns he's owned and never had any major problems plus they are really good on insurance. I can vouch for that.
