Cool Tail lights work but no brake lights

2001 vw beetle,tail lights work but no brake lights.

That means your tail light switch is probably buggered - they were subject to recalls in the USA but not where I live (Australia). If its never been replaced and the fuse and relay are OK then I'd ask a dealer if you qualify for a free one.
