97 Pontiac Grand Prix Engine Failure after dealer replaced intake manifold gasket.

Help!!!

I own a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix with approx 160,000 miles. It has the 3.8 v6.

On Feb 5th I detected some antifreeze on the top of the engine. I took it to my dealer where they did a pressure check and found that the intake manifold gasket needed replacing.

They did the job and charged the usuial dealer prices. About 2500 miles later my engine started making metal on metal noises and another dealer diagnosed the problem as internal engine failure and says I need a new engine.

I had a couple friends who work on cars a listen to the car and they both said it is probably a rod or rods.

When looking back at my receipt the dealer never changed the oil or filter when replacing the intake manifold gasket. Both of the friends says it it common practice to change the oil after replacing it just in case.

I confronted the dealer and they said they will take a look at it. I need some advice form more people what they have encountered in this situation.

Please help.

Thanks,

Re: 97 Pontiac Grand Prix Engine Failure after dealer replaced intake manifold gasket.

If the coolant was leaking into the engine, which was common with the intake problem, the coolant mixed with the oil would damage the bearings over time, facts are missing such as how long the leak existed and did it get into the oil. If you have the oil analyzed by the several labs that do this, coolant intermix will be obvious if you cannot see it in the drained oil. I've never done one of these jobs without changing the oil and even then engine failures can occur if the problem was not attended to in a timely fashion.

if you haven't taken it to the dealer yet, you might want to get a sample of hte oil and send it in to a lab. Specifically, have them check for aluminum oxide
