Mk4 Fiesta 1.25zetec - Revving @ idle and limited Revs whilst driving

Hiya

I have a 1997 Mk4 Fiesta - 1.25 zetec. It has a couple of problems and wondered whether any one had any suggestions...

firstly the car revs between 800 and 1000 rpm at idle constantly. Its really quite annoying! - Someone told me to disconnect the battery which would resent the engine management system... after doing this, this created another problem (and left the revving problem). Now the car wont let you rev past 5,000 rpm whilst driving. It seems to limit me, especially in 2nd and 3rd gears - It wont let me go past 80mph at all.

Another problem is the fact that its running cold... think this maybe the thermostat though but you may think this has some relevance to the above.

Any suggestions would be a great help!!
