Need help replacing alternator!!!
I dont know what the hell is up with this damn thing but its pissing me off! Is there some sort of trick to removing these alternators in a 91 cherokee 4.0? I've removed all the bolts (to the best of my knowledge) on the whole bracket assembly and the stupid thing still wont budge. And I cant seem to loosen the drive belt either. and there is no automatic tentioner. Pls help... I can even get to work until I get this new alternator in. I've spent probably 7 hours working on it so far and have gotten nowhere.

Re: Need help replacing alternator!!!
The serpentine belt adjustment is at the power steering pump. You loosen the two mounting bolts on the front and the two bolts on the back then turn the adjusting bolt which is underneath the right side of the pump as you face it, to loosen the tension on the belt.
For good pics of the alternator removal go to www.autozone.com. Once there, choose your vehicle and follow the prompts untill you have the correct info in. When you get to vehicle conformation if it's correct click "continue". select "repair info" select "vehicle repair guides" select "engine electrical" select "charging system" select "alternator" Scroll down and you will see pics showing all the mounting bolts which must be removed. |

Re: Need help replacing alternator!!!
Ok, finally I get to give somebody some advice. I just did this last month on my 96.
You are going to need to get that serpentine belt off first. If yours is like mine, there should be a tensioning bolt that is below the power steering pump. before you loosen the tensioning bolt, you have to loosen the bolt at the front of the pulley. (on mine, I had to remove the electric fan to get to it, unless you have a special serpentine wrench). Make sure you look at athe position of the pulley mount before you adjust the tension, because that is about where you want to adjust it to AFTER you are done with replacing the alternator. Once you get that belt off, this job is going to be easier. Then you need to remove every damn bracket that is close to the alternator so that you can position it in such a way to get it out of the engine bay. I pushed mine down through until it fell out. I should mention that it took me about an hour of repositioning, twisting and turning, and then removing another bracket or so, before I got it out. When you put the belt in, adjust the tension again to where it was before, and then tighten the bolt going through the front of the pulley. Your output voltage should be around 14 volts, maybe a little higher when you get done. GOOD LUCK |

That is why this part of the AF is so interesting...
Jeep peeps have character.... I have a Mazda Tribute too, but it is totally boring over there. I don't even try at Toyota. |

Re: Need help replacing alternator!!!
![]() 1.Loosen 2.loosen 3.Remove 4.Loosen 5.Loosen Removing 3 and loosening the other 4 will allow the PS Pump to pivot down allowing you to easily get the serp belt off. Make sure you disco the battery.....disco the alternator....replace alternator. Make sure belt is centered on ALL pulleys..and the the belt is routed correctly.
