Got a quick question for you guys. To start, my truck is the 04 work truck with a 4.3, lbrc. Bought at the end of January 3 years ago, so the warranty expired about 28 days ago, but I got someting in the mail the other day that said the warranty lasts till march (anybody have an explanation for that?). Is it because the first payment was sent in on march? Only 36,800 miles as of now.
On to the question, hopefully I can get to the point b/c I don't quite know what some of the real part names are. Anyway, a few days back I was changing the oil and noticed that right around the very end of the transmission housing where the universal joint is, there appeared to be a slight film of oil. Not much, but enough to attract dirt. I didn't look too hard because I knew I had to get it inspected today, so I could get a look under it easer in the guys shop and there was plenty of fluid. Today, I get them to look, and sure enough, it appears that there is a very slight film of oil. Just to clarify, at the end of the transmission housing where the drive shaft comes out of the transmission, there is a rubber gasket type material covering the shaft. Around the shaft and at the end of the housing is where the light film is. I also noticed that there is a slight amount of oil slung on the underside of the bed in the same area. Guy at the repair shop said it looks like a bad rear seal. So, what are the odds that I can get GM to cover this one? Keep in mind, warranty just expired and only 800 miles over. If not, what cost am I looking at here? I'm gonna call the dealer I got it from tomorrow to see, but wanted you guys opinion first. Thanks |

Re: warranty and transmission seal
If you were a loyal GM customer and had your vehicle serviced by the dealer, I would say no problem.
If not, you can try, but don't get your hopes up. And before this turns into a warranty,GM,Dealer bitchfest..think for a minute about all the objects you own that have warranties..how many of those did you sucessfully have repaired "under warranty" after the warranty period expired?

Re: warranty and transmission seal
Now wait a minute merlin. I've always thought your advice was generally on the money, and I've never been one to complain about any dealer or auto maker, and have no intention of whining about the warranty coverage but it sounds like your implying that warranty coverage is dependant on where you get it serviced. That my friend is a big no no.
FYI, in many businesses where the purchase cost is over a few thousand dollars, warranty repairs are extended in circumstances like these. I have seen it done on everything from central heating systems to high end computers and electronics because they know that repeat purchasers are more important than anything else to a viable business. It doesn't mean I expect them to, or that they have a legal obligation to do so. It just means that they think forward instead of backwards, and know the value of reasonable customer care. |

Re: warranty and transmission seal
Slight weeping from the rear seal is a relitively normal condition. Most of the trucks on the road has some form of weep from the transmission spline area. I would check the fluid level, odds are it doesn't leak enough to concern yourself with.

If your warranty is out or over mileage or time Gm or the dealer has no legal or moral obligation to fix it for you. But if you are a good customer at the dealer the dealer will some times make a good will warranty out of the kindness of his heart and considering you are a good customer. Just like any other company on other things that sometimes will take care of a problem after the warranty is out. But it is there call not there obligation. Run it by your dealer and let him look at it for you. And take you letter on the warranty with you. Good Luck MT
