Updated altoernator

I have that issue with the flikering headlights. I searched here and found the updated GM number for the later alternator. GM #10464469 Assume this would take care of the issue?

I posted about my AutoEnginuity code reader dropping its connection. It is not doing that on other GM models I have used it with. Tech support for the coder reader asked if the alternator might be spiking the line? Given the known issue with the alternator might it be causing the coder reader to drops it connection to the ECM?

What's your current climate right now? Is it cold at all? The alternator you have is sensitive to cold and vibration as you know.

I could see how that might cause a problem with your scantool, it is a scantool right? and not just a code reader?

The alternator could be causing the problem, but you might wait for warmer weather to verify that before spending the money for a new one.

It has been very cold here in central PA. Always had that flickering light issue at times.

AutoEnginuity is a software program I bought that allows me connect to Chrysler, Ford, and GM. I bought the license for all three domestics. Cost about $500. Comes with the software and a cable with a box that plugs in under the dash. Pretty good package. Reads for codes and also allows you to view and capture live sensor data. It connect and shows I have no codes. I start to view live data and then it acts like it is disconnected. Seems to stay connected unless I move the car such as put in gear or press brake pedal.

I started to think about the alternator. If the voltage is varying it could be tripping up the scanner and causing it to disconnect. Since I have no codes and outstanding issues I will wait until warmer weather and check it again. Maybe the scanner uncoveried the alternator in its own way. :-)

If the alternator is having this issue I might deal with it as it can't be good for electrical components.
