Thinking of buying a Ranger

I'm thinking of buying an used '06 base model ex cab 4 cyl.. I need something reliable that gets good mpg. Truck will be used as transportation only. No towing or hauling. I had a Dodge 2001 1500 6cyl. but the mileage was killing me and I traded it for a sub compact car last summer. I hate cars, I should have known better. What can I expect out of a Ranger?

Re: Thinking of buying a Ranger

you take care of it and it will take care of you. the old 2.3 are reliable but i am assuming you have a dohc engine. so i am unaware of its lively hood. but keep to the maintenance chart and it will last.

As long as you won't mind a mediocre to poor acceleration rate, I guess it will be OK.

I have a 95 ranger with the 2.3L I love it I beat the shit out of this truck and it still goes. The biggest thing I have had go wrong with my truck is that the alternator went after 220,000km darn

Re: Thinking of buying a Ranger

bignugly,
I have a 2000 2.3 Ranger (I4) and love it. Gas mileage is about 24 MPH and it consistently rungs great. It did not get good traction in the snow, but after loading up the bed with snow and putting on chains--it works great.

Best Regards,
Stan

there is no code evap, the code should say p followed by 3 numbers i.e. p143, p056, p034... etc... etc these codes tell us what is going on according to the cpu. there are codes dealing with evap system. but there are quite a few and the exact codes will tell us what is wrong.

i agree ford needs to offer a v-8 in the ranger. but they also need to work on the economy. i would hate to see it grow because of competition tendency to grow in size. you keep complaining about problems you are having but you do have a 10 year old truck and if it isnt taken care of all its life there will be problems. i feel that maybe the case with your truck you cannot even give us the correct info when you complain about problems.

Re: Thinking of buying a Ranger

E powers:

I bought the truck in November 05. it had 121,000 miles. The check engine light was on. Auto Zone said it was EVAP. I have replaced: EGR valve, DFFE, Purge solenoid, all the hoses in the emission. the gas cap, the fuel pump, had the cat converter checked, (which cost me $80 for nothing), they unplugged the battery and it came on the next day. I then went to Amco transmission, had the tranny checked and they said it was fine but the 4 Wheel drive didn't work. They said the check engine light and bad 11 mpg was the 31's. I Had them put new Ford hubs on, and now it clunks and the ABS dash light is on. (Along with the check engine light). The truck is in perct body condition, it had to have been garaged and taken care of. I paid $3200for it and have spent $3000 and still the engine light is on and it gets 11 mpg in town. I will get the exact code if it will help.

Re: Thinking of buying a Ranger

Well I got laid off so the plan to buy a truck is on hold. They've got just what I want at a local Carmax. I interview for a couple jobs next week.
