Replaced starter, still nothing happening

My daughter's 95 Civic dx would not start and a friend told us it was the starter. All of the lights, fans, etc would still come on but when you turned the key you got nothing. We replaced the starter and still get the same results. Obviously our diagnosis was wrong. Does anyone have a clue what our real problem might be?

Re: Replaced starter, still nothing happening

maybe the solenoid wire isn't hooked up. is it making a clicking noise at least or no. if not then i dont think your solinoid is getting juice. maybe its a severed link between the ignition.

Did you try to jump start it? Could be as easy as near dead battery...

If not, then ignition switch seems to be most probable cause

No clicking noise at all. I'll check on the ignition switch. Is that an easy fix? I am not a mechanic.

Re: Replaced starter, still nothing happening

Already tried to jump it-no change. Maybe it's the ignition switch like you said.

Thanks!

Re: Replaced starter, still nothing happening

Yea, then I'm almost sure this is either ignition switch or the wire between ignition switch and starter. Can't really tell how hard it is to replace ignition switch cause never did it, suspect it may be tricky because of disposable bolts used to hold it - as always safety/security measures make our life more difficult. I would make sure the wire is fine first, cause this seems to be easier job.

The ignition switch is expensive to repace and may require you to get a new key for the car. It's best to have the dealership do it so they can record the new key information incase you loose all your keys. Check the ignition wire running to the starter solenoid and if that isn't the problem then I'll post how to check the ignition switch.

could also be a fuse. make sure it didn't go bad. i know fuses "only" pop when they are over loaded, but they can wear out over time too. just another easy check before u get into the nitty gritty

Re: Replaced starter, still nothing happening

Thanks for your suggetions for my starter problem. I recently found a guy who lives nearby who worked only on Hondas and he quickly found that the new starter had been overtightened and the solenoid was cracked and that it was also improperly grounded. He took it to a shop and got it fixed and put it back on for a very reasonable price.
Unless relatives or friends know for sure what the heck they are doing, don't let them near your stuff. I know he had good intentions but it really wasn't worth the time and trouble.
