Scraping sound when coming to a stop...

After having the brakes, rotors and upper linkage arms changed, my 95 G20 has developed a slight screeching sound when coming to a stop, mainly when going down an incline. It is not the squeeling of brake wear indicators, but is does sound like rubbing. My mechanic checked the brakes out and they appeared fine. He though it might be suspension related. Anyone have any experience with a similar problem?

I've had that before on another car (non-nissan), so I'm not sure if this would apply, but...

there is a shim - flimsy piece of metal which goes between the brake caliper and the pad. It's half the size of the pad and designed to "toe in" the pad, so it hits the disk at a slight angle. I got this symptom when I fitted the shim the wrong way round!

maybe something, maybe nothing. Otherwise, can you describe the sound any more - i.e. is it a squeel or a high-pitched vibration? If it's a vibration, you should check the tightness of the caliper bolts and perhaps the turret bolts under the hood.

I would say it is more like a squeel. The only thing close I can think of is the sound of old mattress or sofa springs, except it is a constant sound as you are comming to the peak of braking hard.

Stupid question, you have fitted the 'anti squeal' strips in??, basically its a spring/peice of metal (not sure what they are on g20's)that stops the brake pads vibrating to there resonant frequency causeing a sqeel.

Definately not a stupid question as I don't know what they are. I had the work done at a garage. What are these strips? Are they normally part of the brakes on the G20?

Every cars a little different, on some cars they are attatched to the pads, others a metal strip that fits betweens the top of the pad and the caliper. Cant help you too much on the primera/g20 as i've only had the car a week and not pulled a wheel off yet, BUT will look tommorow for you, see if i can see where they're fitted, although i've got a '98 p11 GT so they may be slightly different i'd hope they'd be similar.

Also if they are fitted they may just be bedding in, can take several hundred miles, how many have you done since changing pads/disks(btw you guys in usa call the disks rotors???)

Yes we call them rotors. What do you mean by bedding in? It started to occur with maybe 100 mile or less since the work was done.

Bedding in, when you've changed pads and/or rotors they need to 'bed' in together, takes 200-300 miles when you should try your best to brake slowly, after this time they work at there best. Have had cars before that sqeal for the bedding in phase then are ok afterwards.

My spouse says it sounds to her more like the creaking of a loose floorboard. Or in other words like pulling a rusty nail out of an old piece of wood. Except that it starts when the hard braking starts and gets louder as you get to the peak of your stop and then stops. It just doesn't sound like typical brake squeal but I can't put a finger on identifying the sound.

I believe these "strips" are what eeyore was referring to as the shims. A lot of shops either forget to put these in, or, don't put them in outta sheer laziness... In either case, that's what it sounds like to me...
I once heard a rumor that because they don't use asbestos in the brake pads anymore, that is the attributing factor to why new cars brakes squeal all the time.... :bandit:
