Talking SRT8 Owned

Ok, so a buddy and I were out cruising around the local Porsche dealerships looking for a Cayenne Turbo for him to buy, coming home we're on the local coastal road minding out own business. When I see these head lights come rushing up behind us over a bridge, they slow down rapidly, stay behind me and then switch lanes and get in right behind me. Which I thought was weird, being the only cars that'll randomly slow down and get right behind you are cops.

This obviously wasn't a cop, cause this was an SUV. After roughly 30 seconds of him on my tail he swings back out into the left lane and blows past me. I thought it sounded pretty healthy, and figured it was a SUV with a V8 with aftermarket exhaust and nothing of it. At the end of the bridge we hit a light and I and he's sitting 3-4 car lenghts back from the line waiting for the light. I look the badges and realise it's a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Which have the 6.1L Hemi making 420hp and are AWD. Kind of a pointless Jeep, but are FAST.

I decide to see what this car can do and throw it into tow/haul mode in my Chevy 1500 with the 5.3L L33 truck motor, making it's whoping 285hp and gassed it. He got the signal and blew past us like we're standing still. Obviously... sounded very good too. This guy just keeps going on up to I'm guessing 70-80mph in a 40mph zone. We cruise at 40-45mph, when Tom I go "Oh shit!" and on the left in a gas station was a cop, both cops were outside their car fueling up. We both keep looking back to see if we see the Cop coming up, but we see nothing. Then we notice the dude in the Jeep has dissapeared around the bend up a head and we try to catch up, but we're not seeing him.

We figure he saw the cops and maybe turned off the main road and was going to lay low. A minute later we catch up to him at a very busy intersection, which has two left turn lanes for our direction. He's in the right left hand turn lane, I pull up next to him in the left lane with my window down. As I pull up his left turn lane light goes green. I wanted to give the guy a thumbs up and tell him it's a nice little truck he has, but he hesitates then guns it outta the hole. We watch him take off... we figure he's going to take the turn right?... Wrong, he guns it forward towards the oncoming traffic which is also turning left and as he's going he passes between two cars that are going the opposite way turning left... and here comes that cop we saw flying up and throws the lights on.

We both go "OH FUCK!" and the SRT8 MASHES he gas and takes off, the Cruiser takes off after him, our light goes green and I mash the gas, I figured we were going to see this to the end!

But the SRT8 owner runs for roughly a mile and pulls over, the cops fly up behind him with the full take down lights on and both doors open and hands on the guns ready to draw.

We pass by just in complete and utter shock that this guy was so crazy! :o

Then we spent the next 20 minutes just laughing how stupid the guy was... going straight when he's in the left turn lane... and then running like he did, and just speeding in general. I mean, he was speeding when we first saw him 5 miles back... I'm not sure what the guys problem was. Part of the problem we think was he had Colorado plates, and we're California... so it's possible he didn't know the streets or that particular intersection, but c'mon. Intersections don't really change... signs mark which lanes go where.

Funny shit!...and those SRT8 Jeeps are pretty wicked. Damn impressive what they do, for as heavy they are. In all honesty, if the guy had known where he was going... he could out ran the cop before he got backup. He was moments way from entering a freeway system where 3 freeways come together and he could hopped on, and flown for 2-3 exits and got off and sit for a while. The cops wouldn't of known what they were chasing... the Jeep SRT8 doesn't look like a Jeep.

I also feel a bit sorry for the guy, cause I sorta started it, but he was already speeding when we saw him, so I don't know if what I did would of effected the outcome I think he would of speed past the cops reguardless.

Good times.

Re: SRT-8 Owned

Thats a pretty crazy story, he must be pretty messed up to blow past the cops at the gas staion, but i guess if it was me i wouldnt have thought that they would come after me if they were filling up. Hes lucky he actually made it through all those left turning cars too, i wonder what he all got charged with lol.

Re: SRT8 Owned

I think those Jeeps run a low 13 stock.
Impressive. Wonder if they fall off up top though.

Sounds like an owner that may not have his much longer.
Gonna look for a used one??

Re: SRT8 Owned

haha, nahh... But I'm pretty impressed, those things haul ass out of the hole. No drama, just goes... it'd take a well sorted out car to keep with one on the street, and you'd have to try at it. Good sleeper car, I'd seen them in magazines, but this is the first time I'd seen one in person. And even then I was still confused as to what it was.

I thought it was a Dodge Dakota with exhaust at first glance to be honest, and not a Jeep.

Re: SRT8 Owned

I like those srt jeeps, finally saw one in person and it took me a few seconds to recognize it. The central dual exhaust is pretty nice, and so are the launches. We tried our hand against it with an rsx-s and it put lengths on us fast.

Re: SRT8 Owned

OHHHHH so they are real?
I raced one a few nights ago. A black one and It had a SRT badge on it.
I thought it was some ricer that just ripped a badge off a charger and glued it on his jeep.
I swear for the last three nights Ive been wondering why a guy in a jeep would try to race me!
Im such a dumb ass!

Re: SRT8 Owned

I did race it! its slow dude!
I mean its fast for a jeep but its no charger.
it had me through first but then again I have to ease off the clutch in first so most every race I let them go on in 1st. but I nailed his ass by 3 or maybe 4 cars by 4th gear.

you sure its a 13 sec? looked more like a mid-low 14s. kinda 350Z territory

Re: SRT8 Owned

Maybe you raced an srt badged 5.7L. The SRT jeep is actually quicker then the charger thru the 1/4 from what ive seen due to the awd. Did it have a central dual exhaust?
