Ok so Im not a 240 person this is for reserch for my 510 im looking on a website for a sr20det motor and the site has the red top sr20det listed as 205hp and the s14 blacktop sr20det at 225hp so what is the diffrence and are the blocks the same as far as mounting ect. thanks most people use the redtop s13 swap in datsuns and the blacktop is not that common

Re: diffrence between a s13 and s14 motor

you should read the stickies, but im feeling nice today so i wont rip you a new one.

the redtop was an s13 motor with 203hp and 202 tq
there are 2 blacktops.
the s13 blacktop is from the 95-98 180sx and has 203hp and 202 tq. basically exactly the same motor as the redtop.
the s14 blacktop has 217hp and 202 tq, basically because it has variable intake valve timing. otherwise as long as your harness, ecu, ect is from the same kind of motor, they all bolt right up.
EDIT: not to a datsun, they bolt up to a 240. the same mounting points.

Also, from what I understand, the S14 motors also stall differently to control emmisions. The S13 had some weird valve on the exhaust for emmissions.

Re: diffrence between a s13 and s14 motor

S13 SR20 is better, the main horsepower for S14 comes from a larger turbo. The s13 sr20 however, has a much better head, and by better I mean potential-wise. If you are keeping things stock, then the newer versions of the engine will be fine.

Re: diffrence between a s13 and s14 motor

if you swap a newer motor than your shell and ecu, you will have some rewiring to do. i believe the coolant temp sensor is different, and iirc the 02 sensor is different.
