Re: would you buy again ??
Most definitely. I've had an '99 since new and 173K later it's still a good car. I've replaced the lower intake gaskets and the water pump but that's it. I know people who have had absolute nightmares with some imports, including Honda and Toyota. Sure the malibus have some issues, but most are easily and fairly inexpensively resolved. If you're buying a vehicle to keep and work on yourself, definitely a better choice than the Japanese crowd.

Re: would you buy again ??
With the problems I've had - NO. Although it is still a pretty car, I would have done better with a 99 Camry. And that's really sad because I used to love Chevy. The 99 Malibu has turned me against Chevy.

i have an 03 malibu....120,000Km's on it....Mostly highway miles, and lemme tell you not only is my piece of crap, a piece of crap, its bad luck....3 serious accidents in 18 months (none that I was at fault for) 3 sets of brake jobs, 2 different wheel bearings, and now i'm having that issue that MOST people seem to be having with their malibus....car starts...then dies...seems to be fuel pump but not...and then your' left paying for a car that doesn't even work!!!!!
So to answer the question will I buy another one....not only will I NOT buy another Malibu....I will NEVER buy another Chevy....and I grew up with Chev vehicles....lost complete faith in Chevy....*shame* |

Re: would you buy again ??
I did buy again. Replaced a written off 03 Malibu with a 05 Malibu.
There is a definite improvement from the 03 to the 05. If the next generation makes the same kind of improvement, the Malibu will be the best car on the planet

Re: would you buy again ??
Nope. '98 Malibu. Cam snapped at 131k because of the gaskets. Thats the second GM engine i've had die because of that. GM may make a solid truck, but they make crappy cars.

Re: would you buy again ??
I have a 97 Malibu that I just turned 100K miles on. I have had some problems but all pretty minor: 4 batteries, one alternator (around 80K miles), power windows (early on covered by warranty), faulty turn signals (recent this month, still working on solution), front suspension clunck and a check engine light that comes on when the fuel tank is low (recent-??). Overall I am happy w/ the car I bought. For the 10 years I have had it I would say the problems are minimal. Cost for fixes are usually much less the what I would spend on a few payments on a new car.

Re: would you buy again ??
With my 04 malibu, the problems that have arised under the warranty were one time issues.. What Im saying is yes. Id buy another malibu, because there isnt really any huge problem trend with them.. Not like the infamous 3100/3400 intake gaskets.
The exception is issues with the electric power steering, but after the part was replaced with the upgraded part, there hasnt been a lick of trouble since. I think Gm burned a lot of its good customers with the earlier malibus due to thier poor design and quality. The newer malibus are a hundred times better in terms of quality, and IMHO rival Hondas an Toyotas now. The trick is gm has to apply this to every product they make if they want to attract customers, and the previous ones who got burned are going to be the hardest to convince. I was a previous GM owner, I owned a 2001 Pontiac Montana with the 3400 engine, and that vehicle was a total peice of junk. Within the first year of ownership, I was nailed with over $6500 in repairs. It took a lot of review and condsideration before I purchased the malibu. Gm has come along in leaps and bounds in terms of quality, but here's to hoping they have learned enough to save themselves.
