Something is wrong...

I always thought astonishing the BMW S70/2, a very high specific output with so much torque. I have seen these figures in many places: 479 lbft - 4000-7000. But then I discovered the formula that says: Power = Torque x Angular Velocity, that can be simplified like you see here

If you use the formula you discover that if it had 479 lbft on 7000 RPM, it would have about 638 hp, which is impossible since the max. power is 627 hp at 7400 RPM.

I always assumed it was wrong, but I want to know your opinion. I still wonder what would be the real figures. If someone could put it on a dyno...

Here's the engine:

Peak torque is at around 5600RPM.

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I needed.

Re: Something is wrong...

That may be true originally, but by the time the top speed run was done in 1998 I assume that would have definitely been rectified. Otherwise, McLaren would have used a different car I am sure.

You're probably right. When I did my calculations a few months back, I found that the car needs 602hp pushing it through the air (that's wheel horsepower) at 240mph. The 550hp engine, even with an increased volumetric efficiency from the 240mph headwind, probably wouldn't have worked very well for that =)
