Question automatic launch

when launching in an auto u dont shift from neutral to first right because i think with the auto trans it would ruin the trans. So my question is how do u get a good launch. sorry for the stupid question

Re: automatic launch

Oh no, I forgot the most important part, ALWAYS make sure you're in R, that's your Racing gear. Do that and you'll outlaunch everyone.

Re: automatic launch

lol. seriously, i'll give him a helping hand....

brake + gas = revs to tq converter.

revs to tq converter = let off brake when want to go

letting off brake = auto launch.

basically, turn O/D off, hold the brake so you dont move, and press the gas at the same time. hold the gas all the way, and release the brake. its not the best launch but the only you can do for now. some cars respond to launching at different rpms with the gas + brake method. i know mines does, as 2100 is better than 2500, for less wheel spin.

Re: automatic launch

There is actually some technique to launching an auto that has some decient power. If you have some problems with spinning you do not want to just lay on the gas and let it keep spinning. You want to let it turn over maybe once or twice and let off a little for some cars. You just have to get a feel for it.

Re: automatic launch

I get a decent lauch in my GTP when I do the brake/ gas launch. I hold the rpm's to about 2000 and when I let up on the brake I ease into the gas and let the s/c get up to boost and then floor it. It all happens pretty fast. I laucch at about 1700 rpm's in my Jeep but I dont have to worry about spinning tires so I go WOT off the get go...

Re: automatic launch

also, you dont want to hold the rpms for too long, as you'll cause excess heat to the tranny, which is bad. this method is better than reving in neutral, then droping it into gear.

I used to rev in neutral and drop it into drive for fun in my old 92 camaro 5.0. Couple of transmission mounts and a motor mount later I figured it wasnt such a good idea.

I also have heard that dropping down gears in an auto while driving is not so good, but switching gears up from a dead stop isn't so bad.

Re: automatic launch

i'd say dropping down gears isn't too bad. as long as it is pretty resonable downshift, it'll be fine. but downshifting at 30mph to 1, would be pretty wearing i'd think. im always turning the O/D on and off, when im driving to have it switch gears, for engine braking and passing power.

Re: automatic launch

yeah. but chiquae, im not sure how your getting a good launch by power braking...my sentra didnt do all that well from 2500 or w/e the tq converter lockup is at, and my ex gf's 01 SE did worse...to tell you the truth, i got the best launches neutral dropping from 3700 to 4000 or so, but i used redline shockproof tranny fluid, and my tranny never had a problem with all the abuse. that said, never do it in your own car. ive seen automatics shatter from a neutral drop.

Re: automatic launch

it's better than neutral dropping it. the more tq of the rr sr20 i guess helps me out a tad. i can spin the tires at 2500. i also have no idea how im able to rev it that high. but the best would be to just mash the gas with o/d on in '1'. i have no idea, but it depends on conditions. i also dont floor the car until 3500 rpms, as the ecu will have the engine switch from econ mode to wait a second, than open it up. i do have to agree though, N dropping from about 3k is pretty nice, but no thanks on the tranny wear. never doing that again.
