Thumbs down Who needs a driving test anyway?

This just in, from the "WTF are they thinking?" file.

Here in NZ - I just heard on the news this morning - they are thinking of doing away with having a driving test. The plan is that you would qualify for a drivers' license when you get so many "credits" - from driving instructors (perhaps ok), and parents!!!!!!!!

WTF?! Given that most people's driving is shocking, how on earth are they going to teach their children to drive safely? Given that - as we have just seen in the news - parents (and grandparents) buy alcohol for their offspring, and don't seem to mind when they're missing for 3 days (despite blood-stained clothes in the laundry), how likely is it that they would be any more responsible when it comes to credits for a drivers' licence? "Mum, I need you to sign this so I can drive!" - mother swigs from RTD in between shooting up - "sure, where is it?... There you go, now **** off again." - "Thanks mum". And kid goes off cruising.

hmmmmph grumble hmmmph

I’d really like to know who comes up with these stupid ideas. This is supposed to decrease the amount of road crashes. Just how do they work that one out?

If they are only thinking about it, I bet it doesn't get far at all. I wouldn't have a problem with it if they needed the credits from driving instructors, I think that would be fine. If they did that over here, even though it would benefit me greatly, I wouldn't want them to do it, its just a horrible idea.

Stupid beaurocratic bastards...........before you know it,kapa haka credits will be eligible.

Having watched my wife's driving 'test' a few years ago,I can only marvel that there are not more fatalities on NZ roads.2 quick circuits of a quiet suburban block,no reversing,no open road,no parallel parking....The same applied when I sat my HT licence.

Surely it's time to severely toughen the licence instead of constantly raising the ACC levy on registration, and while we're at it,teach Auckland drivers some goddamn manners!!!!

Can anybody supply a link for this story? It's even more absurd than the 'easier licence testing for geriatrics' idea........

possibly here - if that works. It's on the One News section of www.nzoom.com

I don't know if it's the right item or not, because I can't view the video at work.

...guess it didn't.

Anyway, there's a poll on the site, and so far 85% say yes you should have to sit a practical test to get a licence.

The fact that kids can get a GTS-t skyline or GTR 323 or GSR lancer for a first car disturbes me enough, letting them loose in such cars with out ever having to sit any kind of practicle test is just beyond my conception of stupid.

I think I need to hurry up with getting my British passport. The UK might be cold and damp, but its looking more and more like a safer place to live.

Ah yes - governments at work. When there might be a problem, find a way to make sure there is one.
