WIP - 1/14th Scale Ferrari 643 F1

okay, okay its not exactly a 'model kit' but It does have a full plastic body, and its not a polycarbonate body. It is an RC car, but it will be run occasionally on a closed go kart track and will be somewhat of a shelf queen .

I just got this in from Japan, it is very nice for a 15 y.o kit, This build is going to take me a few weeks while I get all the bits n pieces in, paint, carbon fiber weave decals, etc. I spent way too much on this kit so I'm not really worried about spending a few more $$ for some 'small' finishing touches, I am going to model this on Alain Prosts 1991 Challenger, I am a huge Senna Fan, so i think it should be only fitting that I do this Ferrari with his old arch rival in mind. Here are some quick pics I just took of it, and If someone feels this should be in the RC section, then thats fine, you can move the thread, but its kind of dead over there

Btw, on the vintage circa 1992 Tamiya instructions, it says the color to use is 'TS-8', which is now known as Italian Red, is it still the same color as it was back in the early 90s, I know Ferrari Changed the color of its red in the late 90s when Schuey joined the team, any thoughts on this theory? I want to get the color perfect

some pics:

also, this is the place I was thinking of buying the carbon weave from....

......for the chassis/body detailing, does anyone else have any other links for some carbon weave, as im new to the whole carbon detailing scene.

TS-08 is the right color for this Ferrari. They changed to the Marlboro fluo red in 1996 when Schumacher joined the team and "Marlboro" became the main sponsor while McLaren moved to "West".

Don't want to start an argument, but 1996 was the last year of 'Italian Red'. The 1997 F310B was the first 'flouro red' car

After racing 1/10 Road, 1/10 dirt 2wd, 1/10 2wd Truck, 1/18th Micro, and even planes, I hope that you race with a back up body!!! I have spent as many hours on a micro that I have spent on a model and when you first spider the paint you will cry. Then again, how would you find a replacement for cheap? But I agree, leave it here, this will be cool. Looks like a really detailed body for an RC.

Re: WIP - 1/14th Scale Ferrari 643 F1

If I have some spare time this weekend I am going to make a start on the chassis, my LHS doesnt carry Tamiya white Primer , so I am going to buy that online. I'll more than likely pick up the TS-8 Italian red paint this friday from Hobby town usa, I have been to a few HTU around the country, and my local one leaves alot to be desired compared to some I have gone to in other parts of the country. He doesnt carry any Tamiya RC stuff, and only a handful of Tamiya model kits . On another side note, My other Tamiya F1 body arrived yesterday, the McLaren MP4/6. I'll get started on that after the ferrari is done, It fits the same chassis. Btw, the replacement bodies, can be had for $6-$15 + shipping. There is one other body for this chassis that I wouldnt mind getting and that would be the Lotus 102B. They were the only F1 bodies made in 1992 for this range of cars.

Re: WIP - 1/14th Scale Ferrari 643 F1

also, I have a few questions that I would really love some input about

1. Should I primer the red plastic of the ferrari body with Tamiya White Primer or Tamiya Grey Primer, Ive seen various ferrari models where both types of primer were used, some builders chose white, others chose grey and im confused as to which one would be best for my car

2. Ive changed my mind about the carbon fiber weave and im going to go for the basic weave look, at 1:12 scale it will just be slightly out of scale, how many sheets would I need? And am I insane for wanting to do the suspension parts, all the body work, wing tips on anything that is flat/semi black on the car using CF. Alot of upclose pics of both cars show CF on the 'black' part of the front/rear wings etc.... I plan on doing CF detail to both my Ferrari 643 and McLaren MP4/6!

3. Painting the helmets?, they are quite small, compared to the car, should I just buy the small tamiya paint bottles and some good quality paint brushes or should I buy some more TS spray cans, I found the paint code for senna's helmet in the little paint bottle, but If I decided to paint senna's helmet on my McLaren Body that im also going to work on, what yellow TS color would be best?....I am paranoid about getting brush strokes on such prominent part of the car/driver

any input will be appreciated,

Gav
