Question I want new 3rd

Hey all;
First of all, let me just say Merry Christmas to everyone and their families. I won't be here for a couple days but I had a question before I took my break.

I realized since my car is too heavy, would it be possible to get a different 3rd gear? Like to drop the tranny and swap third with a different ratio gear? While racing while already rolling, if 3rd was a different size or different ratio, then it may provide better accerlation throughout all of third. Right? Any input on this? I think once my head is done, I'm going to start with the tranny, new clutch, flywheel, so on.

Re: I want new 3rd

Yes, you can swap different ratio gears in these trannys... I'm not sure which ones will match yours specifically, but I know for us 4g63 guys we can swap em in from Galants and Evo's trannys... I think you should do it. It will definetly help you out with everything you have done.

Re: I want new 3rd

I don't think it's worth it. I like long gearing, not sure what the gearing is on the NT's, but it usually is a good thing. What's the point of accelerating quickly and finishing 3rd gear, when you only go up 15-20mph? While you're shifting and getting out of your powerband, the other guy is WOT staying in his powerband. This is a reason STI's suck on the highway, they are geared way too short imo.

Re: I want new 3rd

But wouldn't changing the gear (not too drastically) allow for quicker acceleration when in that band? Sure, 4th will be reached sooner, but wouldn't the different ratio of 3rd allow for a better entry to 4th? And most of the time, I don't even shift to 4th. I don't do long races to 100+ mph. I mostly do dragging from a stop bc my car has the best speed from a stop. But I don't know. I'm just thinking. Any other ideas? Other trannys that would work?

Thanks

Re: I want new 3rd

Your exactly right David, your acceleration would be a lot better... If its quicker acceleration you want then that would be the way to do it. Its the same concept as rwd owners swapping out their rearends for a lower gear ratio for quicker acceleration. Of course like Crunchy said, your highway driving won't be as economical as it used to be. But I really don't think its that horrible of a difference.

Re: I want new 3rd

But then again, I don't drive in 3rd on the expressway. I only use 1-3 to get up to 4th or 5th. I rarely even actually drive in 3rd at all, so I wouldn't be losing much. Any ideas on what other trannys would be useful? Junkyard time! LOL. Does anyone know what the ratio is now, and what would be good and useful? Thanks

Re: I want new 3rd

I couldn't even tell you off the top of my head. I barely ever redline it unless its very important. I usually shift normal driving at 3k. So there's not too often when I hit full speed through the gears.

Re: I want new 3rd

1st - 35
2nd - 60
3rd - 95
4th - 125 or so
5th - 160

Third gear in these cars is very slow. Most of the time when I lost a race it was when I shifted to third.

Re: I want new 3rd

So does anyone have any clue on what other tranny gears would work? I was going to talk to a local tranny shop, but then stopped and realized that most people don't know much in these shops around me. DSM love is not shown at all.

Also, then how am I looking to re-gear it? Smaller ratio? Bigger?

Re: I want new 3rd

Smaller will give you faster acceleration, less torque. Bigger will be slower but give you mad torque... That is IIRC...
