MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

I just installed a used msd 6a ignition and blaster 3 coil on my 1999 nissan altima. I modified a distributor cap to bypass the internal coil in the distributor so I could run the blaster 3 coil. Everything ran great for an hour when the coil exploded. All of the oil came gushing out the top through the coil tower. Any ideas why this could have happened? Could the MSD box be bad or could the coil have just been worn out? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

Are you sure you had it wired right?

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

yeah, it is. Orange to the positive side and black to the negative side of the coil. The weird thing is it ran great for the hour it worked. The engine had plenty of power and was very smooth. I wondering if it overheated because of where I mounted it or if I've got excessive resistance in one of my spark plug wires that caused it to overheat. On the bright side at least now I've got a reason to buy a blaster SS which I like better.

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

Maybe it was supposed to have a resistor for the coil?

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

This diagram I'm looking at does not show a resistor being used on the msd 6A, possably the factory coil did and you didnt bypass it and thats whats causing the problem?

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

I checked that when I hooked the msd box up. There is no resistor anywhere in the system. The msd box is hooked directly to the coil. I'm thinking maybe the coil was damaged when it was shipped to me. I bought it used and the box it arrived in looked like it had been tossed around and abused. Maybe it caused a small crack in the coil that opened up once it got hot. I'm going to get a new coil today so if this one blows then it has to be the msd box.

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

sounds like high saturation caused severe overheating.

Bout the only way you can cause that is either incorrectly wired, or the computer is fubar'd. Since you have done some custom modifications to make this all work, I would definitely go over your setup carefully.

Re: MSD blaster 3 coil blew up

I double checked the wiring this morning and everything is correct. I've got another idea on why this happened. I had the first coil mounted on the intake right next to the head where it got pretty hot. I also didn't have the coil securely mounted either so it was able to move around somewhat. Maybe it tipped partially to its side for awhile which caused it to overheat. I know the blaster coils need to be vertical otherwise they'll have issues. I got a new blaster 2 coil yesterday. It fired right up when I put it in with no issues. I've got this one securely mounted in a place where it can get good airflow so if it lasts that must have been the problem. If it does blow again at least I get a free ignition coil (1 yr warranty)
