Howling Noise
Periodically, I hear a low howling noise coming out of my 99 Ford Ranger engine compartment. It is most noticeable when idling. The noise comes on and goes away unexplainably. The noise seemed to originate in and around the airtake box and the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). When I placed my hand on these components, I also felt slight vibration. There is not much in the airbox but could it be coming from the MAF? otherwise the vehicle seemed to run OK.

That's interesting as the vibration can be felt all the way to in the air valve housing. I'm not having with it now. It seemed that it occurred mostly during hot ambient temperature. I know I have power to the solenoid because otherwise my vehicle would've had idling problem or stalled. It must be an intermittent problem with the solenoid. It also could be dirt.

He is right, it is the idle air control valve. They call this moosing. It is sound resonance from the valve not opening and closing properly. It does mess with the idle in park when this noise is going. Can prematurly wear out your o2 and MAF sensors. Replace it!

Surprisingly I have not experienced the phenomenon for a while now. But I did, I have not noticed any abnormality with the idling. I know the device works because when I disconnect the terminal, it negatively affects the idling. However, it still could be the culprit but just doing it intermittently. If it starts happening again, I'll disconnect the ICS and see if the noise goes away.

Howling Noise
I have a 98 Ranger with a 2.3 4cy. I noticed several months ago that once in a while when I press the clutch in it sounds like the engine stays revved up. At first it only did it once in a while, then it started doing it more and more. I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, but that didn't help. I thought maybe the spring was getting caught up. I've tried a few other things, but nothing seems to help. I've been to Ford dealerships and several other mechanics, but noone can tell me anything. Any ideas on how to fix this?
