Unhappy Car problems!

I have an intermittent problem. While driving down at highway speeds or just crusing speeds the engine will just shut off. Of course, because the vehicle is in gear, the engine starts back up. Most of the times the engine shuts off and starts back up once, but sometimes the engine starts back up, then dies, starts, dies and keeps doing it a few times.

I'm not sure what I should check, could it be an electrical problem or fuel problem? About 2 months ago I replaced the spark plugs and wires along with a fuel filter.

Any insight would be helpful. It's an 89 1.9 CFI.

Re: Car problems!

If they haven't been replaced in a long time, start with an inspection or replacement of plugs and wires. If that checks out, check for looseness at the timing belt. Also check your intake system and be sure it isn't plugged up. You have to start somewhere... start narrowing things down.

Re: Car problems!

Decided to rephrase what I meant in my original post. I am still having the same problem.

Re: Car problems!

Check your ecu for any stored codes...sounds like a fuel pump going bad. Mine kept doing that, mainly around corners, or getting onto the freeway until it finally died on the freeway. The fuel pump had been going out, and finally locked up.
If you need help for checking error codes, just ask. Don't go buy one of those code readers, they won't work. They have a pin in the wrong spot for reading 1st gen escorts, and any year tempo.
