Did you replace the temp. sensor on top of the intake manifold? The one to the left of the thermostat housing if you are standing in front of the truck.

Re: 1996 C/1500 Chevy temp guage doesn't work

The sensor that your gauge gets the signal from is on the left (drivers) bank, between and just below #2 and #4 spark plugs. One way to check to see if the gauge is good is, with the key on (engine off) unplug the wire and touch it to a bare spot on the cyl. block. If the gauge moves it is good. You will need some help, have a friend watch the gauge as you do this. Hope this helps.
BTW the sending unit (located in the intake manifold) controls the ecm.

Do as they say ^^^^ and also pull your thermostat housing to make sure you have a thermostat in there.

The sensor in the intake is for the PCM not the gauge. The sensor for the gauge is in one of the cylinder heads. On my 90 it is drivers side between #1 and #3 cylinders. I am not sure about which side it is on the 96 but it will be obvious.

That's the one, I'd try doing as Horse482 suggested.

Re: 1996 C/1500 Chevy temp guage doesn't work

Make sure the spot you touched it to is a good ground. I don't know where you are, but here in Iowa you'd have to spend 5 minutes with a grinding wheel to get a good ground through all the rust.

If it is a good ground, ground the wire as close to the guage as you can get. If it still doesn't move, the guage is most likely bad.

Re: 1996 C/1500 Chevy temp guage doesn't work

Well now, that makes it sound like a bad thermostat. Check the ECT with a scan tool. If it is less than the minumum reading on the guage, the guage is probably good and you just need to replace the thermostat.

What you are saying should not be. The sensor for the guage should only go to the guage, therefore should not affect how the engine runs.

To confirm if the MAF sensor is bad, unplug it and drive. If it drives mostly like normal, the MAF sensor is most likely bad. When the computer sees NO signal from the MAF, it uses RPM and IAT to figure about how much air is coming in. If it sees a bad signal, it goes by that signal. Your check engine light will come on for this test.

You may wish to re-evaluate your choice of mechanic. The lower hose on the radiator SHOULD be cold. Either he is trying to pull something, or lacks this basic knowledge. Either way, it may be time to look for a new shop.
