Removing Desktop Icons

I have no icons on my desktop, i put everything on my taskbar, like so:

now, i want to get rid of the IE and the My Docs, but i can't. Simply right-click > delete doesn't work because next time the taskbar refreshes, they're back. Going into Display Properties > Desktop > Desktop Items and unchecking both doesn't work, they're both still there.
those are the only 2 ways i know to get rid of them, and it hasn't worked. Any help?

Re: Removing Desktop Icons

I can't help you within Windows, but you might enjoy a product like DesktopX or ObjectBar: http://www.stardock.com/consumer/

There are a few more downloads similar to those, I know one that changes the Windows look into that of Mac OSX but the name escapes me. Look around and you should be able to find something you like.

Re: Removing Desktop Icons

If you want to get rid of all the icons on the desktop, then

1-Open the Registry
Start, Run, "regedit.exe"

2- Go to the following key..
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer.

If you see "No Desktop" then double-click on it. If not then you will need to create one by clicking on the Menu "Edit, New, DWORD value"
and enter "NoDesktop" as the name fo the value.

After you create it or if its already there, then double-click on the entry and change the value to a "1"

Then refresh the desktop either by...
A: clicking anywhere on the desktop and hit your F5 key, or
B: Do a "Cntrl-Alt-Delete and get the Task manager up.
With the Task manager up, click on Process and scroll down to explorer.exe, click it and hit the End Process button.

Windows should refresh itself without losing any open programs. If it does nto come back, then using the Task manager , click File, New Run Task, and enter explorer.exe and choose Ok.

Windows will come back and you will not have any desktop items anymore.

Note: If you want to get them back, then just go back into the registry and delete that NoDeskTop Value.

Re: Removing Desktop Icons

TS, did everything word for word, and the I still have every desktop icon in my taskbar. I don't want all of them gone, either, just the two that i don't need, the IE and My Docs. they always seem to want to stay. If i delete them, a prompt tells me that i can go to properties and turn it off, so i did that, and they still show up after every refresh.
(also, i never had any icons on my actual desktop, just the desktop folder in windows, and my taskbar.)

Re: Removing Desktop Icons

Why not move the Desktop folder on your taskbar to your desktop, then try removing from desktop properties, then moving your desktop back to a taskbar folder. Have you tried that?make sure to reboot when you have it as you want it to save the changes.

3) In the "Display Properties" window click the "Desktop" tab.

4) Click the "Customize Desktop" button.

5) In the "Desktop Items" window uncheck the "My Documents" and "Internet Explorer" boxes.

6) Have a beer.

Re: Removing Desktop Icons

Do a google for Powertoys for Windows XP. You want to use Tweak UI. Use that, it will let you turn off whatever icons you don't want.

I have my display settings set for Classic as well. I've never cared for the "Fisher-Price" look of XP.
