Should i buy a Ranger?

I'm thinking about buying a 2007 Ranger.
Either a Sport or the STX not sure yet.
What can other owners of Rangers tell me about the car.
And am i making the right choice?

Re: Should i buy a Ranger?

You can probably get a good deal on one. I have a '93 XLT Supercab. Bought new and put 160k miles on it. Not exactly trouble-free, but it has given me good service. Bear in mind, though, the 2006 or 2007 is basically the same truck that came out in '99, except for the hideous grille. That was the last time Ford did any serious updates on the Ranger - which either means a stale design or proven technology. It's a shame, because they really owned the compact truck market once, but it looks like they are content to let that slide.

Re: Should i buy a Ranger?

What's good about a Ranger is that there are about a zillion of them out there and you can do quite a bit to modify them, if you want - therangerstation.com is a good place to start.

The power difference between the 2.3L and 3.0L is marginal. Never was a big fan of the 3.0L. The 2.3L gets better fuel mileage. The 4.0L SOHC is the biggest motor they put in a Ranger, will yeild best power, but you will loose fuel ecomomy.

if you are going to drive the truck for 0-20 years i would say go ahead. but if it is going to be only4-5 or less it would be best to gewt a year or 2 older model.

styling wise i personally like the 93-97s the best and 2000-20002.

i am starting to love my 93.

Absolutely not! My 97 4X4 4.0 has been nothing but trouble the 10 months I've had it. 11 mpg and the check engine light won't go off no matter what I do.

I've been seeing your posts from time to time. It sounds like the mechanic is the issue, not the truck. Obviously bad mileage and a CEL is nothing serious (like a knock in the engine), but with bad fuel mileage, you usually end up with fuel in your oil that leads to premature failure. CEL indicates the system sees a problem, and it contains 'hints' has to what the problem is.

Did the mechanic tell you what codes appeared? What all did $1300 get you, or what did the mechanic replace? Did he test the fuel pressure, if so what was it? Sounds like the mechanic was hit and missing/blindly replacing things, and didn't take the time to find what the actual problem was. That's good for the business $$$, bad for you.

i drove a 97 for my daily driver for a while and i had the same problem with the CEL... a few of my friends have also... and the gas mileage... i got around 25mpg (4 cyl, standard) driving normal. why dont you try letting off the gas a little bit.. you dont have to shift at 7000 rpms every time, or any time for that matter... at least not in a ranger

Re: Should i buy a Ranger?

My truck is a 4.0 automatic 4X4. The code is EVAP. The dealer replaced the DPFE, the purge solenoid, EGR valve, a hose, that was $250, checked the catalytic converter that cost $90, replaced the fuel pump in the gas tank that cost $500. Every time I got it back they said it was fixed and 2 days later the light pops back on. It only comes on when I accelerate fast, but then stays on until I unplug the battery. The gas milage is 11 mpg on the highway. It actually does better in town. It runs ok, but seems like it could be a little more powerful. The mechanic said maybe there was compression loss, so I put in slick 50 and it runs a little better. As far as take care of it, what do you think i'm doing by putting $1300 in it? It has been in the shop 4 times in 10 months, with no result.

try a differant mechanic. i never had a problem that after spending 1300 it is not fixed. there is nooooo code evap. the codes stored in computers will start with a "p" and 4 numbers after it. the code may be evap related but there is no code that says evap. and once you can spew that combination of numbers on to these boards some one may in fact tell you what you need fixed. and because of your attitude i for one hope it is a cheap and easy to fix item. because if you were not reading the codes all you can do is change expensive items to try to fix this.
