clutch or tranny?

Hello i just bought a 91 honda civic for dirt cheap.... with no background information when purchased. When it was started and running i could shift into all gears when pedal was pressed in, but the car wouldnt hardly move in 1st wouldnt move at all in reverse, and in neutral if i took my foot off the pedal it would die like it was in gear. anybody give me any insight as too what the problem is? thanks alot..
