I tend to exceed the speed limit....

I must admit that I have a lead-foot while driving....I got stopped a few weeks
ago for going 63 in a 55 zone. Just got a "warning". Whew!

I decided maybe it would benefit me to look into After Market Cruise Controls.

I could set the thing to 57 mph and exceed the limit but still be OK with John Law.

Knowing how the '93 Geo Metro's throttle linkage is done on the 3 cylinder,
I wonder if putting a Cruise Control on it wouldn't make the cable jump off that
rotating lever arm?

So, I'd like to start a discussion of

1. Inexpensive "after market" cruise controls - cost, where to get them, etc.

2. Best way to hook up the cable pull so as not to booger up the cable where
it wraps around the throttle lever.

3. Did Geo Metro's come with Cruise Controls? Could I find the parts to such
in a wrecking yard for a '93 with a 3 cylinder engine...couldn't be so lucky!

Maybe I can keep from getting a ticket for my natural habit of driving like
a Indianapolis 500 race car driver (or an idiot).

Partamerica.com wants $105 for an Audiovox Vacuum Controlled CC part number ccs100

JCWhitney.com wants $125 for exactly the same thing.....

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

eBay wants $90. I can't make out if the shipping is paid or not from all the
Blah, Blah, Blah about shipping fees...."qualify" - Bullsheise.

Schucks sells the Audiovox for $105. I should just go there!

I am concerned about the "magnetic pickup"....I know what that means.

Why doesn't it have a tachometer input from the coil like any decent one does?

That would be easier to employ!

I see that others have had success with the Audiovox, so.....any comments on it?

I almost got caught this morning doing 59 as a State Trooper car passed me.

They have FLR - "Forward Looking Radar" - so they zap you as they are
approaching you!

Damn!

Can't get away with squat any more!

My Metro rolls so freely and with the 3 cylinder engine, going down a slight hill
speeds the car up several mph quickly.

My route to work is via a hilly road - ups & downs plus 'idiot driver' traffic.

So I spend more time watching the crappy drivers than the speedometer!

I bet the Cop cars have cruise control! Easy for them to catch off speed
drivers. I just wish they'd nail the buggers who either drive slow or who don't
maintain a consistent velocity.

My country road into town usually has morons who slow down to 50 on EVERY damned curve,
speed up to 60 where you could pass them, then slow down where you can't pass.

I wish I had a roof mounted 50 cal....but then they'd have one also!

DoctorBill (just kidding).

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

i just put one of the schucks ones on my wifes 95 metro. on the metros you attach the cable to the gas pedal under the dash you do not attach it to the throttle body. also you don't need to hook up the magnets, you find the speed sensor wire on the computer and attach it to that. also you do not need to put a switch on the clutch pedal. the computer inside the cruise control has a sensor that if you step on clutch it will disconnect the cruise if it detects a rise of 100 rpm and speed doesn't increase. it took me about 3 hours to mount it because i had to bend and drill some holes in the universal bracket they give you to attach the unit to the gas pedal. i mounted the unit on the strut tower and ran the cable in through the firewall. she wanted it beacuse she used the car to go over to the tri cities to visit relatives and says her foot get tired without it on long drives

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

Hi Crvett69 !

I was wondering about that business of attaching the vacuum pull cable to
the gas pedal - that makes more sense to me!

While I was working on my '93 Metro's throttle body in pervious threads, I had
the darned throttle cable come off that curved throttle connection - it simply
falls off and falls outside the cable run on the curved throttle lever!

Pain in the arse!

Attaching the vacuum puller cable to the gas pedal makes so much more sense!

So - you attach the input wire to the computer....can you be somewhat more
specific? Which lead on the computer.

I remember the computer is not placed for a normal human to get at it - at least
a 64 year old man who can't see very well up close and who gets stiff and
sore trying to go under the Geo Metro dash board!

However, I will try your method! Apparently the connection on the computer
does not need any buffering - like a resistor, etc.????

Doesn't bugger up the computer?

As to the clutch pedal switch - my old old old one long long ago had a switch
on the BRAKE pedal to disconnect it if one had to brake.

I would also like one on the dash - just in case....

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

the contol panel with the on off switch and the set and coast buttons you mount on the dash someplace its easy for you to reach. i can tell you what wire it is on the 95 but the computer mounts behind the glove box so it might be a different wire color. the cruise control comes with a book that tells where the computer is and what wire to use. it comes with the clips to attach it to the wire and it connects direct, no resistor needed. if you run into problems it comes with a toll free number and if you need to call them for some help i think you actually talk to someone from this country. the blue wire on the switch didn't say what it went to so i called to ask. you will need to hook up about 6 wires all together but they aren't hard to figure out.

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

I suppose you did the Computer connection because of the difficulty of using
the magnets and mounting the magnetic pickup sensor.

I had a vehicle many many years ago that was rear wheel drive and so had a drive shaft.

That Cruise Control was actually the nicest because you can change gears w/o
having the CC go bannanas!

With a Tachometer type connection as input, the CC goes ape if you change
gears due to the rapid rpm change being detected.

With the magnetic pickup, the car drive shaft doesn't change rpm much and
so you change gears while using the CC - like from 4th to 5th and back.

I've done both so long ago that all I remember is how they worked.

The more magnets you can place on the shaft, the finer the control over your
speed.

I wonder if one could mount magnets on one of the back wheels (evenly spaced out)
and use the mag pickup that way?

The only bad thing about the magnets is adhering them to whatever - the
drive shaft or Constant Velocity joint.

If not done with good glue or with the shaft oily, they fly off when the shaft rpms
get up there.

You have to constantly check to make sure some haven't flown off!

Well, one more project to do.

I still have to put in my Tachometer Dash....I abhore the thought of tearing
into the Dash and finding the Speedometer Cable output on the Transmission.

Getting old and lazy and grumpy and fat.

DoctorBill

PS - I would like to add a microswitch to shut off the Cruise Control if the Vacuum
Puller is "Bottomed Out" as when going up a hill and the thing is trying to give it
more gas, but can't handle the hill.

My old one's did that and can pull so hard that they'll rip apart the throttle linkage!

So a microswitch (set to the brake wire) would cut off the Cruise Control if the driver
forgets to disengage the CC on a steep hill....

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

OK Crvett69....I just bought the Audiovox CCS~100 at Schucks! ..... $104.95

So I will be annoying you a lot while trying to install the bugger.

I saw Geo Metro in the Reference Manual on page 23 in the General Motors section.

I can either use the Yellow/Green wire to the ECM @ 4000 pulses
OR
the Blue wire to the Coil.....

The box is heavy...

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

or you can use both wires like i did. the magnets looked like a real pain in the butt to attach to the axle so glad i didn;t have to do it that way. i don't think i would bother with a microswitch. the pedal has a stop in it that it can't go past anyway. to attach it to the gas pedal i found it was easiest to just take off the 2 nuts holding it in and set it on the seat to put the collar on it. i think you might till be able to shift gears with the cc. at the most you might have to hit resume on the keypad. you bought the same unit we did

Hold off a little longer Doc. The tape style laminate I used doesn't hold up nearly long enough. I have a new heat laminator and I just need to print up some new gauges and then I will send you a new set.

Thanks,
MMM

Re: I tend to exceed the speed limit....

Hey GM Line Rat....

Taking pictures is my thing!

I went over the limit again today w/o even noticing it until I saw the State
Trooper car up ahead, lights flashing with some poor, dumb pekker-head pulled over.

So I want to get this installed before I get a $300 ticket - this device will pay
for itself right away! Just hope I don't fall asleep....that's why I smoke cigars
while driving....riding in cars is hypnotic for me - always has been.

I was thinking of taking pictures of my excellent technique when (and if)
I get together with my wife.....a bit akward holding the camera and doing my
incredible acrobatics and such....

Problem is - where to post the pictures? .....lol

Sure! - photos coming soon.....

Have family visiting tomorrow for several days - so all I'll be doing is eating
BBQ and drinking Beer and yakking. Hard work!

Metro Mighty Mouse....

Good thing you said that! I was getting ready to install the Dash....

Irk....

Nice site! However, I want to install the "pull" cable onto my throttle pedal like Crvett69 did -
it makes much more sense to do it that way since that is the way the
throttle cable works in the first place.
