'94 HUD problem

Just picked up my 'new' '94 Cutlass Supreme convertible, flew to San Diego and drove her back to Colorado Springs. Have a few small issues; coolant level sensor, temp sensor for the gauge, gauge works but reads very low, will also be checking the thermostat, steering wheel controls for the heater do not work.
The HUD is getting power from the dimmer/power switch (can see the HUD panel lighting up), but no numbers/indicators. Is there a harnesss for the HUD behind the cluster, or are all the wires spliced individually into the system? What is the best way to get the dash apart to have access to the wiring?

A previous owner replaced the factory stereo with an aftermarket CD player. I'm wondering if they jacked up a bunch of wiring installing it. Anyone have an original AM/FM/CD they want to part with??

Thanks much!
Jeff

Re: '94 HUD problem

In your case it sounds like you have some experiance, but you will need some very specific information to diagnose. I recommend using the library to get the repair manual for the exact car. It will have all the wiring diagrams, which of course will help you one 100% to know how the HUD is wired.
If I manage to find some diagrams i'll update your thread.

Thanks for the response Ian!
I have a monster manual for it with all the wiring diagrams, but it doesn't say much about it's connectivity. I guess I'll just have to tear apart the dash and see what it looks like.

Im glad you have the book, because the diagrams I have here arent too helpful... The information I do have on the HUD unit is so basic it's hardly worth mentioning. It recommends that service of the unit is best left to a dealer, and that if the HUD info is light, but seems very dim, simply clean the HUD screen with a slightly moist towel, but do not spay window cleaner on the unit.
I now suspect that the HUD info would probably come off of the main instrument cluster...it would require less wiring that way, which is cost effective and therfore makes sence. I supose you could test the wiring coming from the cluster if possible.. most definately keep us updated!!

Re: '94 HUD problem

Well, the HUD itself works fine. The height adjusting switch is broken and won't pull the cable to the down position. The HUD's mirror is spring loaded to the up position. I disconnected the cable and set the proper height, but I'm sure the display is going to creep up as I drive. I now need to search for a HUD switch assembly and cable.
