73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
im building a "racing" chevy pickup with a 383 stroker capable of 475 horses and about 500lb/ft of torque. its going thru a properly stalled th400 3speed automatic with a posi rearend that i dont know the gear ratio, but i did 60 in first a couple times with the old motor when i tried to blow it up and it actually did ok. it will likely have about 10 or 12 inch tires in the back.
what do you guys think it can do against one of them new mustangs (i think the 400ish horse ones) i think that my pickup actually has the weight advantage, as it only weighs around 4000 pounds with factory sheetmetal, and even less with all the jap steel replacement panels. the new stangs i think are around 4000 pounds also which i see as rediculous. you guys think my old pickup will hold up against a stang? lol i know for sure one of them older stangs with even just a 289 or whatever they have would rock the hell out of the truck, but i dunno bout the new ones |

Re: 73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
brother, you have a lot to learn about mustangs. for one, the new gt's weigh 3350, no where close to 4000. secondly, there is no new mustang with 400ish hp. the gt has 300 and the gt500 has 500. the gt500 does weight nearly 4000lbs. the 06 mustang gt is also faster than the old 289 mustangs, and thats a fact. it has a really nice suspension set up for launching, good gears too. there is a 2003/04 mustang that was rated at 390hp, but they were drastically underrated. they only weighed about 3300lbs also. and those kicked the shit out of most everything. the new mustang gt's run mid 13's in the quarter. what do you think your truck will do? theres your answer. the gt500 is in the 12's

what he said........but also with 475 hp I think you should be able to take the new GTs with confidence.

Re: 73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
I think you Mustang guys would get severely disappointed if he raced even the 03 Cobra. 475 hp, 3-spd auto, probably big gears..I garuntee he'll see sub 13 second 1/4 mile passes.
He'll be well into the 12s.

Re: 73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
Well maybe.... this is a theoretical truck here right now. Time will tell what comes of it. He was saying though that an old 289 mustang would rock the hell out of his truck....... but pretty much all the recent mustangs let alone cobras would rock the hell out of a 289 mustang.

Re: 73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
03 cobras have been known to go into the 12s pretty well stock, with a good driver. however, how many 03 cobras are stock anymore? but anyway, i wouldnt doubt hed win, he has a nice advantage with 475hp. and id be willing to bet it would be set up to launch well.

His is probably the typical street build up. Flat top pistons, flat-tappet cam, fair heads. So yeah, he'll be gettin up into the 400 hp range.

Re: 73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
All I am saying is that its hard to judge weather his truck will kick the ass of an un named newer mustang when the truck isn't even built yet. I am sure that somebody could make a truck to beat any car, not just to include mustangs, but the newer mustangs are really no push overs. I say sit on it and watch to see what becomes of this truck. I am really interested to see the end result of this project. Seems like some lofty goals, and if it meets them he could save money by only painting the tailgate...being that it will be the only part of the truck most would be racers will ever see.

Re: 73 chevy truck vs 2006ish mustang
No no, this mythical truck is for Mustang beating purposes only.
It may beat a 500hp Mustang, but it'd lose to a 350hp LS1.
