WIP: 1965 El Camino LS1
Just a quick first pic, another customer's build. Basically stock on the outside, but I cut the cowl hood out of a '70 Chevelle's hood and grafted it on there with glue and putty. I think it looks pretty good. The engine will be an LS1 out of an f-body, with Corvette fuel rail covers. Colour will be Dupli-color Dark-Cherry Metallic.

Re: WIP: 1965 El Camino LS1
Well the paint's ruined again, and into the brake fluid it goes... this is the second time I've had this problem with Dupli-color metallic paint--I spray 3 mist coats, about 20 minutes apart, then wait about 2 hrs (to outgas and harden) just like a lot of other guys have done, then spray one solid top coat. Then the top coat, after drying, turns milky and hazy!
I don't get it. This method always works for me with solid/singular colours, be they Dupli-color or Tamiya. Am I just not giving it enough time to outgas before the top coat? Should I wait 24 hrs after mist? Seems weird... |

Re: WIP: 1965 El Camino LS1
i have always had that kind of trouble out of the duplicolor metalics so i don't know what to tell you, last time i tried them i did wait over 24 hours before the final coat .. and it still looked milky ... all i can figure out is it just has to be done in numerous small light coats with no thick coat ...
i even made sure the can was shook up and heated and such just in case that was the issue (have had several duplicolor paints .. 'seperate' on me when they cure... i have since stopped using em) |

Re: WIP: 1965 El Camino LS1
Ya but I HAVE used them with success before, which is why I don't know what's wrong. I used to do it the old "wrong" way with 2-3 mist coats and a heavy coat about 20 min after instead of waiting 2 hrs or so for the mists to set... oh well, guess I'll try that.

Re: WIP: 1965 El Camino LS1
John, I never follow the painting guidelines when spraying with duplicolor. It flashes really quickly. I can paint a model from start to finish in about 45 in tops. I have even cleared in a couple of hours. I would try rubbing it out if it happens again, just try not to use silicone based cutting compounds as that will cause issues with the clear adhering.

Re: WIP: 1965 El Camino LS1
figured out anything on the duplicolor metalics yet? .. (note, the comment i made was mostly directed at their metallics that is what i have had so many issues with, i have only used their non metallics on a few occasions with fair success) ..
