1/12 57 Chevy Sports Coupe
This is my first WIP on this forum. i havent posted much here but I have been drooling over everyone else's work for a while now.
I have only about 6 months building experience but a lot more time on the internet watching what people are using for scratch building etc. I helped my dad build this model when I was about 5 or 6 and recently found it in storage, it turned out to be a glue bomb. I ordered a new kit and am using my dad's old one for practicing. I am making this a super detailed (to me anyway) build and hope to complete it so I can give it to my dad. the majority of the nuts and bolts will be removed and replaced with scale hardware and microfastners stuff. I even sanded down the real bolts to make them look a bit worn. this is what i have done so far, I've only painted and completed about 80% of the fuel injection assembly. i would love to hear feedback and criticism, how to make it better, etc. HERE IS THE REAL THING FOR REFERENCE ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice! I like the way you have those giant fingers next to it to make it look scale. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing this one progress!

Wow, is that impressive. It's like a complete model already with all the detail.

to be honest I really dont have that much experience building. i spent a lot of time on the forums seeing what others were using for scratch building, how they went about it etc. I am learning patience and I'm getting better. Take some time to do a little research and look at the other guys' WIP. When you sit down and decide to do it, you'll be able to do it. This is the first time I've added anything more than spark plug wires. |

Re: 1/12 57 Chevy Sports Coupe
Well I finally made some real progress. I have completed steps 1-2 out of 44 or so of the whole model. There is still quite a bit to go on the engine alone and it took quite a while to get to this point, but I am very happy with the outcome so far. I am learning all of this detail and scratchbuilding stuff as I go along. All of my skills have been learned primarily through this website and a few other forums, so thanks to everyone!
I used RB Motion sprak plugs, which are also made with the same detail in 1/24. So far I have used between 80-90 actual real bolts on what has been assembled so far. This number will easily reach 100+ by the time the engine is complete. I painted the white porcelain section on the spark plugs for kicks, but it actually made quite a difference. A light wash (or heavy, depending on how you see it) was done to simulate normal oil weepage and grime, I will add a little bit more later when I won't have to handle the pieces so much. Dry brushing was done here and there to show normal usage and servicing, like the oil filter and ignition coil. The look I'm going for is used but maintained. Everything will be kept factory stock, no "hop-ups" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Very nice. The raised script on the valve covers turned out great.

Re: 1/12 57 Chevy Sports Coupe
Amazing. It's almost like you are building a real engine. You say you learned most of your skills and techniques from others on the forum. I think now you are teaching a great many of us on detailing and realistic weathering and very clean building methods.

Re: 1/12 57 Chevy Sports Coupe
Thank you for the compliment. I have never been known to have patience. When I tried my hand at models I found that I didnt get annoyed or angry when things didnt go right.

Re: 1/12 57 Chevy Sports Coupe
Thanks!
I ran into a small hitch with the pulleys, so I started on the transmission. All the reference pictures I have show a different tranny. I'll find the right ones so I can make the linkage, then back to finish the engine. |
