Angry Short in wiring headaches!!

Hopfully someone out there can help me. I have a '02 Rodeo, 4 door, 6cyl SUV. One day I noticed my truck was getting harder and harder to start, til one day after work it left me stranded in an empty parking lot. when I did get it home I checked the alt., battery, and battery voltage both w/ eng running and off. I found the volts dropping off(with eng off). So I pulled every fuse (that stopped my voltage loss) and put them back in and check the batt volts after each one. My volts dropped again when I got to the
Power Locks 20amp fuse. So I know what system is shorting/pulling power after Ign. is turned off. I also know that fuse is part of my anti-theft sys., cause it wouldn't start with the fuse pulled. My question is does anyone have a garage type elect. print of this system and/or experience with this problem. I know how to use a meter and how to troubleshoot. What I don't know is what components and where to find them for this system/truck. The door locks themselves are my first step, but if it isn't them, what could it be? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Re: Short in wiring headaches!!

Had to replace alt few months ago. Dealer saysit was due to a short circuit
by a wire that had been cut by the sharp edges of plastic in part of the routing.
They claimed that short killed the alt. Possible?
Anyhow they changed the alt for an OEM and upgraded the lousy wiring job.
Needed a new battery also for same reason.
The exposed wiring was in the dash, they didn't tell me which one exactly.
They did say they had to pull the gauge cluster to get to it.
They charged me just under $500 for alt & labor.
Ticked me off the wire got cut by lousy engineering but hey,
my little blue war pony is back in business.
And still for sale!

Re: Short in wiring headaches!!

Thank you for your help. the cause was the power wire to the pass. side door lock/unlock sw. A piece of broken glass from when the truck was broken into, was wedged between wire + door. It had rubbed away the insullation causing a draw, but not enough to cause a short and blow the fuse. Taped up wire and replace battery, now it works good, lasts long time(hopefully).
